Tracking Down Deadbeats Bounty Hunter Style

Being a bail bondsman may not be the most exciting job in the world. You help a few people get out of jail, some innocent, some not. Some people use their second lease on life to make changes while others may use it as an opportunity to skip town on bail. As a bail bondsman you feel the sting just as much as the court when a suspect flees. So what do you do about? Do you lament over the money you lost? Get angry about helping them make bail? Or you could grab your cowboy boots, roll up your sleeves, put on a blond mullet wig and hit the streets with pepper spray paintball guns. That’s right, take on the bounty hunter mantel and track the fleeing criminal on your own.

It is important to note that only two places in the world that allow bounty hunting, those being the United States of America and the Republic of the Philippines. Everywhere else in the world bounty hunting is seen as a deplorable criminal act and is no better than kidnapping. Although not always paired with bail bondsman, bounty hunting has become somewhat of a media sensation; we see this in Boba Fett of Star Wars infamy to Duane Chapman, better known as Dog the Bounty Hunter. Before you go out and take it up yourself to bring justice to those who flee there are a few things you should know about being a bail bondsman and a bounty hunter.

Depending on where you are operating your bail bonds agency there may be certain laws and regulations that one must follow when attempting to collect on a bounty. In the case of Kentucky this really isn’t a problem since they prohibit any form of bounty hunting. On the other hand, in other states such as Texas, Louisiana, and Connecticut there are a number of rules and regulations to be follow. These range from simply wearing clothes that identify yourself as bounty hunters, as is the law in Louisiana, to being a certified level 3 Peace Officer, as it is required in Texas. In other states there may be other training procedures to go through such as firearms training, criminal justice training, or other bounty hunter specific certification courses.

In some areas of the law bounty hunters have more freedom than the local or state police. This is mostly because some standard rules that law enforcement follow do not constrain bounty hunters. Bounty hunters do not require a warrant in order to be on private property or to enter a private home, this is only an option after they have confirmed without a doubt the suspect lives there. Unfortunately they are restricted from entering private property not owned by the person the bail bondsman is searching for. Bounty hunters also do not have to read the suspect their Miranda rights. Bounty hunters are restricted in many areas though. In some cases they are not legally capable of carrying firearms and they are also not able to cross international borders in order to collect on a bounty. This is because most countries consider bounty hunting to be kidnapping.
