Can Djokovic Be Beaten?

Novak Djokovic has won 41 straight matches to start the 2011 tennis season and does not look like he is about to slow down. At the time of this article Novak is sitting in the semi-finals of Roland Garros and anticipating his semi final matchup with current world number three, Roger Federer. If Novak is going to be beaten anytime soon we should expect it will be to either Federer or Rafael Nadal, as these three tennis players have separated themselves from the men’s singles pack for the past several years.

It was usually a two horse race for number one between Federer and Nadal, but of late Djokovic just cannot be beaten and the only way he will not be ranked number one in men’s tennis after the French Open is if he loses to Federer in the semi’s and Nadal wins the championship.

Can Djokovic Be Beaten?

Federer is the last player to have beaten Djokovic, and this was in the Barclay’s year end championships, that Federer won, defeating Djokovic in the semi-finals on his way to victory. The pair have met three times this season with Djokovic winning each time, but these were all in Novak’s first three tournaments of 2011. Djokovic won by a total of 7 sets to 1 and Federer has not looked great on clay this season leading up to Roland Garros only winning 6 matches to his 3 losses in a few warm-up tournaments leading up to the French Open. Federer is not a clay court master and I expect Djokovic to handle him easily in this semi-final match.

This brings us to Rafael Nadal who Djokovic will likely meet in the finals. Djokovic has beaten Nadal four consecutive times this year, with each win coming in the finals of fairly large events. Four of Djokovic’s last five titles came after he beat Nadal in the finals. Two of these championship matches were on clay, which shows that Djokovic is for real, even of Nadal’s favourite surface. In fact Djokovic won both clay finals by 2 sets to 0 each, while he dropped the first set against Nadal in the two hard court finals they battled it out in this season. Nadal has at least been making the finals of these events, unlike Federer, which leads me to believe he will have a better chance defeating Djokovic at Roland Garros.
I personally think Djokovic will once again come away with the title over Nadal and he will have won the first two Grand Slam events of the season. With the tennis season nearing the halfway point and Djokovic still undefeated many tennis fans are starting to get excited about the possibility of not only a Grand Slam, but also a perfect season. That will be quite the feat for a player that was still trying to be mentioned in the same breath as Federer and Nadal as recent as last season.

I will be placing a few dollars down on Djokovic in all of the remaining matches, even though he will be a pretty big favourite in the Federer match. He will still likely be the underdog in the finals against Nadal and smart money says he continues his streak and defeats Nadal where he has been the best in his career: on the center court at Roland Garros.
