Steel Buildings As an Alternative to Traditional Architecture
The greatest advantage of steel buildings is the ease of which they can be constructed. The design, unlike other architectural structures is simple. They are easy to modify and adapt to practically any site.
That simplicity comes from the structural design itself. These buildings can be erected on a concrete slab, but often they are not. Simple barns, garages, arenas and picnic pavilions are often just erected on site, and on the ground. They are meant to be completely utilitarian so in many cases a foundation is not necessary for the use of the structure.
Post and beam structures are ideally suited to this type of structure. The load bearing posts are sunk into the ground with the few cross members strung on the outside. The outer skin is then placed over the structure. With that the walls are complete.
Other steel buildings however take on a more tradition approach to design and fabrication. The structures can start in range from wood frame with steel skin, commonly referred to as a tin building. They indeed are not tin.
Then there is an all metal structure that is free standing and where the walls are both the walls and the structural components. There is no inner frame. And last is a preformed metal framed structure with metal components and skin. These may or may not have composite roofs.
Some manufacturers have began preforming the main structural frame components and then shipping them to the site. They may be of hollow steel tubes with the necessary braces and anchor points already welded on. The cost may be more for the project however, it would lead to greater on site integrity of the structure.
These structures also vary in design simplicity relating to construction. The all steel building that has integral walls and skin is usually formed in a large u shape. The pieces are shipped to the job site and unloaded. The large pieces are stood on end with the u shape basically upside down. A simple concrete line foundation is all that is needed to anchor the structure.
The ends are bolted to the foundation one by one. Then another u shaped shell piece is stood up to match the first one, and bolted in place against the previous unit. Piece after piece this is done until a long tube is constructed. The ends can be left open or end caps can be built with roll up and man doors placed where needed. The building is now complete.
These type of structure is designed to allow erection by a handyman with simple hand tools. It is commonly seen as a garage or RV storage. But it can be much larger.
If the buyer is versed in construction the kit buildings may offer great savings. The structures start as huge sheets of steel, and are cut to length as the structure is ordered. All components are put together to complete the structure as ordered. If the buyer fails to pick up the kit, the thing is sold as cut for a discount.
There is no changing the options and layout of these kits in most cases. If the buyer can accept the floor plan and accessories as kitted, then it can offer savings over ordering a structure from scratch. That is one of the advantages steel buildings have over typical architecture. There are very few places that a person can still order a whole building or house from a kit any more.
