A Glance at a Variety of Horse Fencing Alternatives
Horses are an investment and you will want to protect your investment with quality horse fencing. A superior fencing system will protect your horses from injury while keeping them secure. The area fenced will allow exercise for the horses while keeping them corralled to ensure their safety. Fencing is available in many materials and colors and can add to the beauty of your outside area.
The most common example of fences for horses is the wooden fence. A wooden fence is the most popular because it can be created from the trees of the owner\’s property and also bought at a lumberyard or home improvement stores. However they can be broken by a horse and wood rots and has to be replaced. Horses can be injured by the nails in the fence or, if they run through it, they could scratch or gouge themselves over the jagged wood.
Rubber fences are also available and are made from recycled tires and other rubber products. These fences are safe and flexible. They are very bendable and flexible, so a lot of maintenance is required to keep them tight.
Steel pipe fence is another alternative. This fence is available in various sizes. It is the most durable but is also the most expensive. You will probably have to order the fence directly from the manufacturer and the pipe comes to you ready for painting or priming. Pipe fencing is safe because it is not easily broken and is highly visible to the horses.
Gaining popularity with horse owners is vinyl fencing. It has high visibility, low maintenance, and is very strong. The vinyl never has to be painted and comes in a variety of colors and strengths. It will not chip, crack, or rot. The rails can pop out if horses push or chew on them, so it is recommended to run a hot wire along the inside of the top rail to stop this pushing and chewing activity. Vinyl fences are also expensive.
Electric fence present one of the oldest ways of keeping horses inside a certain area. The electric shock given tends to keep the animals within the area it should stay. It also helps keep predators out. It requires an electric source and can run the electricity bill up. The visibility of an electric fence is low and animals tend to run into it often.
Barbed wire fence is effective for keeping them fenced, but injury can occur if they get tangled up in it. On the plus side, it is a sturdy and secure way to keep your animals inside the required area and is the cheapest fence you can buy for your horses. On the other hand, it is the most dangerous fence because barbed wire scratches and causes gaping wounds when run into by a horse.
Any fencing you buy will have to be installed high enough so that the horse will not jump over it. When properly constructed, you will not have to worry about your horses escaping or getting injured. The brighter the color of the fence, the more easily the horse can see it and not run into it. Horses tend to test the limits of a fence, so select a strong one that cannot be chewed on or have large enough spaces that they can stick their heads through.
