Has it really been six months already? It seems like only last week that you reluctantly dragged yourself down to see your dentist. You can still hear the whine of the drill in your ears, and the idea of spending another hour with a sharp metal thing picking at your gums really doesn\’t seem like the best use of your afternoon. Dental appointments are necessary things throughout our entire lives, and it might be nice if you could reduce your anxiety a bit.

Dentists are not ignorant of the fact that they are not anyone\’s favorite professional. Our culture has always portrayed them as vaguely sadistic doctors with bizarre and alien looking equipment. There is pain involved sometimes, and even the recovery periods can be horrible for some people. You can alleviate a lot of your discomfort by asking questions. The days of sitting silently and uncomfortably while a masked doctor picks impassively at your gums are gone. Many professionals today are happy to discuss the procedures even as they are being performed.

Many patients find this level of information to be reassuring in some way, and a greater appreciation for the state of their teeth and gums can often translate into more efficient home care regimens. This, in turn, can make subsequent visits to the dentist easier.

And that\’s more or less what it\’s all about. We are afraid of things that we don\’t understand. It certainly doesn\’t help matters that this particular thing that we don\’t understand is also causing us pain that we can\’t get away from. But if you know what the dentist is doing and why, you can come to terms with it a lot better.

Always remember that you are free to stop at any time. Maybe you need a bathroom break, perhaps your jaw is tiring, or maybe you have simply had enough for the day. If it is possible to stop at that point, your dentist will let you know.

Dental appointments don\’t have to be scary. There are ways that you can frame the event so that you enter into things with a lot less apprehension and worry. Participating in your treatment, even though you are really limited to mostly inarticulate vocal sounds, can be a good way to do this. A dentist who can talk you through what is being done is also a great start.
