Tips to Avoid Getting Fat

With the increase in the number of people with weight problems, and increasing weight loss awareness today, certain amount of worry and anxiety among naturally healthy and lean individuals is justified. When one sees overweight or obese people struggling with their weight, and working so hard to reduce it, it is normal to feel the need to take precaution and avoid landing up in a similar situation. Listed below are some tips to avoid getting fat.

Keep Moving – Research has shown that people who have been slim throughout their lives, basically keep moving. For example, they\’d indulge in gardening, instead of sitting on the couch and watching TV. You could take up hobbies that aren\’t sedentary and require some amount of body movement. Taking the stairs instead of a elevators is another example.

Eat, but in moderation – Putting extreme restrictions on yourself and avoiding cravings altogether can lead to catastrophic binging. Therefore, you should eat whatever you like, say Pizza, but, in moderation. You could eat salads first, and other nutritious foods to satisfy your hunger, and then eat a slice or two of pizza to satisfy the craving.

Do not starve/fast – Starving yourself will not help you lose weight. When you starve, you not only lose fat, but many other chemicals and nutrients vital to the body, thus it does more harm than good. Besides, chances are, you will eat a lot of unhealthy foods after fasting, as a result of pent up cravings. The best thing to do is to eat healthy and filling food like fruits, vegetables, whole grains and sprouts every two three hours, do not give yourself the time gap to be extremely hungry.

Avoid stress – Research proves that a person\’s eating behavior is affected if he/she is stressed. The term \’emotional eating\’ which is quite well known, refers to eating comfort foods that have high sugar content, like ice creams and chocolates, shows the correlation of stress and eating patterns. In fact, worrying too much about losing weight or about putting on weight is stressful too! So try not to think too much about it. As for work related, and other stress, try relaxing activities, like meditation, listening to music, or simply going for a walk.

Keep yourself well hydrated – Water is very important for the body, and honestly, no other drink can act as a substitute for it. Water helps the liver to function properly, and if the liver is exhausted, it can\’t metabolize fat properly. Besides, what you eat also decides the amount of water you should drink. For example, Red Meat has uric acid, and about 2 extra glasses of water are required to digest it effectively. Amount of water intake depends upon the body type and weight. Ideally, you should drink at least 64 ounces or 8 glasses of water each day.

Psychological factors – It is a good idea to maintain a journal about what you eat. Noting down your food intake will help remind you the next time you are about to eat something unhealthy or fattening. Also, you could tell family and friends about watching your diet. Nothing motivates like good social support.
