Brazilian Bikini: Making a Comeback
While bikinis can still turn heads these days, they have come a long way in terms of acceptance in most parts of the world. The Brazilian bikini, in particular, caused controversy around the world when it first became popular. Its history is one of many ups and downs, but it remains the most revealing swimwear on the market.
The bikini is a two piece swimsuit for women that really made its debut on the world stage at the end of the 1940s. Of course, early versions revealed much less than we are used to today. In fact, in some ways, they were just a one piece suit that exposed the belly. However, even in this form, several countries moved to ban them. In others, it was just not socially acceptable to wear them.
By the 1960s and 1970s, they grew in popularity to varying degrees in different regions. The skimpy suit graced the fashion capitals of the world and made their way to the general public as well. During this era, the bikini became more common in movies and on television, which helped it slowly trickle down to the general public. It was in South America, though, that it underwent its sexiest modification.
The Brazilian bikini sticks to the basic to piece design of the original, but does so with a lot less cloth, especially for the bottom. The result is a very revealing suit, which means that wearers need to be in relatively good shape and have the confidence to show it off. As someone said, this is not your grandmother\’s bathing suit.
The trademark of this style is a low cut bottom that hugs the hips. The front offers coverage, but the fabric thins around the sides and leaves the back more exposed. That said, there are variations, from the tanga, which still covers some of the back, to skimpier versions that run only a small sliver of fabric down the back as a connector.
The tops reveal less, but they are still far from being conservative. The tube version covers more skin, wrapping around the chest. Other varieties use triangular swaths of cloth that cover the breasts, but still expose plenty to the sun and to other beachgoers. Intermediate tops also exist for different body types.
This close-cut variety did not retain its popularity forever, though. The \’80s and \’90s saw a drop in sales as other styles came to the forefront. However, in recent years, it has experienced something of a comeback on the big screen, on TV and on beaches the world over.
In the fashion world, things come and go in cycles, and it may just be that the Brazilian bikini is about to ride in on a new fashion wave. This has to do with a mixture of factors, from societal values to media exposure to the aesthetic preferences of different generations. Whatever the reason for its recent surge, you can never truly count this provocative model out, as its colorful history proves.
