There is a new bug that has just started causing problems in the US over the last several years called the shield bug. These bugs are officially known as brown marmorated stink bugs or more commonly, it is just called a stink bug. While these bugs have been around for quite a while, they have not caused significant problems until recently. These bugs can cause very different problems for different people. The specific problems caused by the bugs also depend upon where the infestation occurs. Shield bugs can have an adverse effect on farmers, but they cause different problems if they get into the garden in your backyard or even your home.

Farmers are having a particularly tough time with these bugs as they can easily do substantial damage to their crops. Although, the bugs do not make the harvest inedible, it does leave pock marks on the food. It can also leave brown sections within the food. It is still ok to eat the food once you cut out the brown parts, but clearly this makes it more difficult for the farmers to get a fair price for their crop. While these bugs have so far not produced any price increases, if they continue to be unchecked and causes problems for farmers, the price you pay for certain types of food may definitely be influenced.

It can be very difficult to manage the population of this bug once it finds its way into your home or garden. You do not want these bugs in your house for many of the same reasons you do not want any other bugs in your house. However, this bug is a little different and its name implies the main problem. The bug routinely emits a very strong and unpleasant odor. You do not want this in your house.

The reason that you do not want to have shield bugs in the garden behind yourself is a bit of a merging of the reasons you do not want them in your house or your fields if you are a farmer. One of the problems is that as soon as you get a few of them, you are likely to see a steadily increasing volume come your way. The more bugs you have in your garden, the more likely they are to find their way into your house. The other problem with your garden is that the bugs can eat any food that you are growing. While the food will still be edible, nobody likes to eat food that has bug bites on it! The best way to control the damage that these bugs can cause is to focus on preventing them from coming into your house or garden in the first place. Once they arrive, there are steps you can take to remove them, but it become much more difficult.
