A Guide to Mens Underwear
Just as with women\’s underwear there are various styles that are available. Mens underwear ranges from briefs to long johns. Some men also include undershirts and socks as part and parcel of their underwear.
The most traditional of the underpants range are the briefs. It has full rise which covers the body from the waist to the top of the thigh. They contain either a contour pouch or an overlap fly.
Variations of the brief include a mid-rise brief, a low rise brief, and a sports brief. The mid-rise brief has a similar style to the standard brief, but it has a lower rise than the standard brief with the waistband sitting approximately 2 inches below the waistline. This style also includes a working front fly. With the introduction of low cut pants to the market the low rise briefs have become very popular. They sit approximately 3 inches below the waistline and still maintain the side fabric of the traditional brief legs. A front fly may or may not be present in the design. The sports brief has a front cup and a back panel which are joined together by the elastic waistband without the side fabrics.
Less modest underwear, modified from the basic brief style, are bikini, string bikini, thong and jockstrap. The bikini has a lower cut than the low-rise brief with the top elastic sitting about 4 inches below the waistline. It has full rear coverage and the leg has a high cut design, in addition the front never has a working fly. The string bikini has a similar design to the bikini with the exception of there being no side panels. The leg openings go up to the elastic waistband and have less coverage than the sports brief but a very similar design.
The last two styles, of this modification, have the least overall coverage. Firstly the thong has a similar design to the female counterpart. The style is comprised of a front cup and an elastic waistband with the front cup panel being held in place by a tape that runs through the legs to the centre of the waistband. This style is used by athletes for extra support. The other style that offers minimal coverage is the jockstrap, which consists of a wide elastic waistband with a support pouch and two straps that extend from the base of the pouch around the buttocks and reattach to the waistband on the sides.
The other main style of underpants is the boxer. This style was based on the shorts worn in the sport of boxing. The traditional style consists of a full rise, full cut short with a 3 inch inseam. They have a loose fit and hang to just above the mid thigh with a working fly front.
A combination of the brief and the boxer gives the design of the boxer brief, a modification of the boxer design. These fit like briefs but have the length of boxers. They also have a front fly like the traditional brief. Another modification is the trunk. It resembles mens swimming trunks from the 50s that has come back as a form of underwear. The style is similar to that of the boxer brief but with shorter length on the legs. Compression shorts are usually used for sports and keep the muscles warm due to their longer length and the material that they are made out of.
The other forms of underwear as previously mentioned are undershirts and socks. Undershirts come in the form of sleeve-less or short sleeved t-shirts and generally cling close to the body. Socks come in various styles and colours from dress sock to casual ones.
