A German opthalmologist made the first actual fitting in 1887. This first wearable lens was made of blown glass. His work was published in a journal in 1888.

More comfort and practicality came with the development of the soft variety over the course of the twentieth century. Eventually, extended wear and disposable products were developed to add to the convenience.

Contact lenses are a continuing point of research and development. Susceptibility to bacteria is a problem. Researchers are trying to make them less so. They are also trying to find ways to make patients more compliant with wearing and cleaning schedules. Patients do not always use multipurpose solutions or other daily cleaners properly.
