Kayak Must-Haves

Anyone planning to rent or purchase a kayak for a big trip will need a few essentials to make it through the experience worry-free. There are a few kayak accessories that will come in handy as you make your way through the water, as well as a few hot items that will just make you seem cooler because you have them. These kinds of kayak hardware and accessory pieces will only serve to enhance your journey.

Paddles are one such accessory, these, obviously, are absolutely vital to your trip. But there are so many options to choose from, where does the novice kayaker begin? Anyone who has recently purchased a kayak has likely discovered that their new toy comes with a factory-made paddle. Although, this paddle will help you get a feel for your watery environment, it may not be the best option out there. When selecting a new paddle, you must keep your intentions for it in mind. Whitewater paddles are made especially for steering through rapids, but you may only need a set of standard wooden paddles. Used paddles are another option if money is tight. That said; you can greatly improve the quality of your trip by purchasing paddles specially designed to fit your needs.

Although, it may seem obvious, a first-time kayaker may not imagine that their trip will be very wet. After all, you remain seated above the water throughout the experience, right? But kayaking is quite the water sport. An accessory that will come in handy every time you go out is a dry bag. This little device is exactly what it sounds like: a bag to keep your dry possessions dry. They come in several shapes and sizes so that you may keep cameras and other electronic devices clean and safe. Larger dry bags are called dry duffels, and dry backpacks may be purchased as well. The latter are especially convenient, as they can be strapped on your back in the case that you must carry both the bag and the kayak all at once. It is not recommended to take your kayak out without one unless of course you are heading out without any possessions in need of waterproofing.

If your kayak is of the inflatable variety, you must have an air pump handy. Plan to buy the highest quality air pump your budget allows, because this is not an item that you want to break in the middle of a trip, when your kayak has just begun to need an air refresher. Your inflatable kayak likely came with its own air pump, but like the aforementioned factory-made paddle, it is probably not the best air pump money can buy. Secure a quality pump as soon as possible or you may come to regret it.

When it comes time to stock your much-needed accessories, shop the internet for the best deals. You would not want to buy a used item if you can help it, that is, not unless you can inspect it in person and verify its quality.
