What is Interior Design & Why It\’s so Important?

eople usually find taking up interior design courses impractical and a waste of time and resource. But what people fail to see is the importance of a well-designed and planned room and the impact of interior design to our everyday living.

We are highly susceptible to harmful elements surrounding the outdoors, that\’s why most people opt to spend most of their time in enclosed and protected spaces because it makes them feel safe and comfortable. But with poor space allocation and unbalanced usage of design elements and materials, interior spaces can be as dangerous as the outdoors.

Compared to poorly planned room design a well thoughtout design can be more efficient, specially if it\’s made with consideration of the space users and its usage. In office and commercial spaces, a properly designed workspace is very essential because it is proven to be more conducive to productivity

In the practice of interior design there are a lot of factors that one should consider in designing. One of the most common factor is space planning or area allocation, which is very important in designing heavy foot-traffic spaces, as this helps in providing a more convinient space for movement. Space planning aims to shorten the distance between areas which are interrelated when it comes to usage. A good example of this is in our homes where the bedroom should always require a bathroom within a close distance. This factor can be defined into the design by studying the nature of the room\’s purpose and the workflow within the space. By providing a well planned area allocation, as an interior designer, we don\’t just create fancy and aesthetically pleasing spaces but also provide it with a functional and productive space.

Another important factor to be consdered is the interior lighting layout and planning which we can catogorize into three types particularly general, task and ambient lighting. Planning a lighting layout should be designed with regards to the room\’s size and function. If a space is meant for office use or activities which require the abundance of light, a designer should focus more on providing the space with general and task lighting, and a little ambient lights to give it a cozy feel.

While for function rooms or hotels where sophistication is the utmost priority, one should know how to position ambient lights correctly and should know where to direct the light\’s glare in order to create the mood for the space.

There are certain levels of illumination that can be harmful to the eye, so in assigning the quantity of light fixtures you put in a room, make sure you know how to balance them. Also, you should make yourself up to date with the new light technologies such as the energy saving fixtures, as this is the new trend nowadays because designers now aim to create designs that not only consider human welfare but for the environment as well.

Material selection is also an important factor in defining what a well-designed space is. For one, some materials are made for a specific use and should not be utilized aside from its main purpose, this is due to saftey precautions. A good example for this are floor and wall tiles which in appearance may look perfectly the same, but with comparison to texture, makes a big difference. In choosing a specific material to use, make sure you familiarize yourself with the characteristics and purpose of the material you are going to use as incorrect material usage can often cause wastage and sometimes even accidents.

Those are just few factors that proves why one should take up interior design studies if he wants to practice the profession. Because if one is equipped with the proper knowledge in designing then there\’s no doubt in his ability to create an efficient and sensible design.
