There are several different ways to undertake termite control but these will include digging up the prized flower beds etc. Indeed, termite pest control is big business these days since we will never be able to eliminate them completely. Those who find infestations though must do something about the problem right away since they could actually devastate the home completely.

The first that anyone knows that there is a problem is when they suddenly find that their woodwork is sounding hollow or that paint is all that is holding wood struts together. This can be rather dangerous if the wood is supporting anything in the home so inspections have to be made on a regular basis. Some people will also notice brown tube like structures on walls or across areas which are made from concrete or metal since these are obviously inedible. These creatures are actually looking for the cellulose in wood so when they come up against brick or some such obstacle, they have to build soil tunnels so that their bodies do not dry out when they are foraging for food. The problem occurs when these creatures get into the roof structures since this is where beams hold up the roof etc. If these get weakened, it is obvious that the roof could collapse and the whole thing will have to be replaced. This is not only dangerous it could prove to be excessively expensive too.

The older method of keeping the creatures at bay would involve digging deep ditches around the home or building. However, this was seen as being very disruptive since most people have mature gardens that they do not want disturbed. This would have to be repeated after some years too so this is not the best way. It also meant that toxic chemicals are being poured into the ground and how many of us relish this idea?

There is a new modern method though which means that the ditch digging method can be avoided and it involves sinking long tubes into the ground at intervals around the house or building. These are then covered with small round tops which fade into the background somewhat. Into these tubes is placed appropriate bait which attracts the creatures and they come and feed in the tubes. Since they lay scent trails down for their partners in crime to follow, the whole colony will eventually make their way to the feeding stations. Here is where the clever part happens since the creatures have to carry food back to the nest. Here, the queen will eventually chow down on the same poisoned bait and she will die. Since there is only one queen, and she is the only one who lays eggs, once she is gone, the colony will eventually die off.

The tubes are monitored by technicians who use computer technology to keep track on what is going on. Those feeding stations that are being used will obviously be re-baited when necessary and, since the tubes stay in situ forever, they can be baited again in the future when necessary.
