It is sad to know that some employees work hard to earn a living and to earn money for the family but some of them experienced accidents and injuries during work. Why is this happening? Can these accidents be controllable?

Most often, some workers or employees are not aware that they are already involved in an industrial accident because they believed that these accidents only connote to major injuries or deaths. They fail to realize that industrial accidents are so broad that it covers from simple spill of chemicals to accidents or explosions in a plant. Some of them do not even know how to react or where to go when they encounter these situations. I believed that these scenarios occurred due to lack of proper employee training and information dissemination from employers. Meanwhile, some workers are afraid to report industrial accidents to employers because they are afraid they will be dismissed from work. Most of these accidents result to partial, temporary or total disability and death to victims.

According to the latest statistics from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), about 5,488 workers died from job injuries and 49,000 died from work-related accidents in 2007 alone. Figures from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and the Bureau of Statistics show that majority of these injuries involved the head, lungs, spinal cord, lungs, eyes and skins and about 15 workers died of traumatic accidents everyday and approximately 200 employees are hospitalized.

It was also found that industrial accidents are caused by three major factors namely:
Unsafe working conditions – Accidents and injuries occur due to defective equipment, machinery and devices found in the working area. Unsafe working conditions also include improper arrangement of supplies, improper lighting inside the facility, improper ventilation, faulty layout or unclean working area.

Human Error – Some errors are caused by human errors attributed to lack of needed training and instruction on how to operate the machines safely.

Management – In one way or the other, it is also the fault of the management that these accidents occur because the failed to give their employees the needed occupational training and instructions, guidelines and best practices on the promotion of workplace safety.

Whose responsibility is industrial accidents?

Regardless of how big or small these injuries or accidents can be, it is the responsibility of the management to attend to the medical and hospitalization needs of employees. It is also their duty to provide workers the needed compensation as a result of the accident experienced. And most important of all, it is a must for companies to find means to prevent these accidents from happening in the future. They should find ways of how they can ensure the health, safety and well being of their employees while they are inside the facility.
