Success of Alcohol Treatment is Dependent on the Development of Alcoholism
Relational progress of the dependence to alcohol tells a lot about the history and ultimately the success of the alcohol treatment that will be given. Like being in a relationship, people and the dependence to alcohol also has a relational cycle.
The first stage is what is called the preface. This stage is composed of three sub stages, initiating, experimenting and intensifying. Like other kinds of addiction, alcoholism starts with the introduction of alcohol to the person. This may happen at a very early age when a child sees a member of the family drinking or has grown up with someone who abuses alcohol. It can also be influenced by peers and co-workers.
The initiating stage of the relationship with alcohol is having a taste or a sip in social gatherings. Substances like alcohol can be addicting because of its feel good effect. People usually try out drinking to see what it can do to them and when they like the effects of alcohol, they increase the amount of intake.
It is also noteworthy to remind people that the early effects of alcohol consumption can be positive for some people. It can lessen the stress and even widen their societal circle.
Most alcoholics experience these in the preface stage and then they move on to the maintenance stage of alcoholism. They try to integrate drinking into their life by drinking on several nights until it becomes a routine of consuming alcohol on every occasion. They incorporate drinking with other activities and events like birthdays, anniversary celebrations and fairs.
When this happens, the amount of alcohol consumed increases and its effect worsens. Then, the alcoholic starts to get defensive by hiding their dependence and claiming it is occasional drinking. A primary intervention needs to be given for the alcoholic to realize that they do have a problem and need to diminish or restrict their drinking.
The next stage is undertaking. Once the problem is realized, there is a primary action of avoidance and then the decline happens when withdrawal symptoms are experienced. This brings about a cessation of the consumption of alcohol until a relapse.
At this stage the addict may try to get rid of addiction himself but when he experiences the withdrawal symptoms he again consumes alcohol to reduce he pain, this becomes a vicious cycle of the addict trying to leave drinking without help but consuming more as a result.
The treatment for this particular kind of substance abuse, alcohol abuse, is dependent on the duration of the entire cycle and the amount of time a particular stage has taken until the progression to the next stage. Out-patient alcohol treatment is beneficial to those who went through the cycle in a short period of time or those who skipped stages of growth, than those who considers alcoholism a constant up and down pattern.
Admission to rehabilitation centers or alcohol treatment facilities should be considered if a stage in the development of alcoholism is repeated. There is a cure for alcoholism and there is plenty of help out there. The manner in which the treatment differs is the approach in determining the cause for the addiction and the manner in which treatment is applied.
