The Basics For Selecting a Home Bar
You have three viable options when it comes to placing that dream bar in your home. First option is building your own bar. You design your own bar and build it to fit precisely into the area of your home you want it to be. Second option is to buy a used bar and install it, making your own modifications to fit your space, if need be. Third option is to buy a new bar that satisfies all your needs and either install it yourself or have it installed by a professional.
Whichever option is yours, you must go through a checklist of processes and considerations that will ease the frustration level and give you the charming, entertaining space you crave.
First of all, as with any important undertaking, it is important to have a plan. Consequently, the home of bar builder should identify that area within the home in which the bar will be placed. It is paramount that drawings to scale be made and conducive to the style of home bar that is desired. Those typical styles of bars that can be considered include a standard straight sided bar, a home bar in the shape of an L, a horseshoe shaped bar or a home bar that is rectangular in dimension. It is also important to determine whether this bar will be a permanent fixture or can be moved.
The planning stage also needs to cover where in the room the home bar will be situated. If the bar is to be in the middle of a room, it must look presentable from all angles; a rectangular shaped bar would fill that need. On the other hand, if your home bar is going to be in a corner or against a wall, you don?t care if the side against the wall or sides in the corner are finished and presentable. Here a simple straight sided structure would do nicely.
Also, when considering the investment of a home bar it is important to decide before hand whether there will be full cabinetry in back of the bar or whether the storage cabinets will be underneath the bar.
Other considerations to think through prior to installing a bar include whether the home bar will utilize electricity which would be necessary for refrigeration, lighting, etc and whether the bar will be a dry or a wet home bar. The difference between the two is whether there will be water provided through plumbing and a sink fixture.
As for the actual furniture style of your home bar, the possibilities are practically endless. You can have a bar that incorporates rails for guests to rest their feet at the base. You might also consider padding the bar in places where you and your guests can rest their arms comfortably. This is also a good time to consider seating options. You could go for a standard stool of metal or wood, or go upscale and select leather top swivel chairs or stools.
Lastly, if you are having someone else design, build and install your bar, you must know the dimensions of it. The standard height of bar stools is 30?. If your bar designer has some other dimensions in mind for the bar height, you may have to use custom-designed stools or search for adjustable height stools to accommodate its non-standard height.
