The Cabot Trail is a scenic roadway through Northern Cape Breton featuring some fantastic views and attracts tourists from the four corners of the globe. It is named after the explorer John Cabot who landed in Atlantic Canada in 1497. The Cabot Trail ranges nearly 300 km and takes you through various Cape Breton territories. Along the trail you will find the Cape Breton Highlands National Park which features some amazing hiking and spectacular views. While along the Cabot Trail be sure to visit the many museums and shops and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

The Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site is one of Cape Breton’s most appealing attractions. For those who don’t know, Alexander Graham Bell is most famous for inventing the telephone. The Alexander Graham Bell Historic Institute sits on ten acres in Baddeck, Cape Breton overlooking the Bras d’Or Lakes. The historic site is a tribute to Bell featuring many of Bell’s artifacts, models, photographs, and replicas of his first telephones. Bell had a residence in Baddeck where he did a lot of his research and passed away there at the age of 75. Here is Alexander Graham Bell’s famous description of Cape Breton: \”I have travelled the globe. I have seen the Canadian and American Rockies, the Andes and the Alps and the highlands of Scotland, but for simple beauty, Cape Breton outrivals them all.\”

The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site is another popular tourist attraction of Cape Breton. It is a reconstruction of the original 18th century French fortress – one of the most extensive European projects in North America. The Fortress was destroyed in the 1760’s and was not reconstructed until nearly 200 years later. Today the Fortress is operated by the Canadian Government ( Parks Canada) and there are more than a dozen buildings open to the public. While visiting the Fortress of Louisbourg you can parrticipate in one of the guided tours where you will experience demonstrations of life as it was back in the 18th century.

Yet another popular tourist attraction is the Cape Breton Miners\’ Museum located in Glace Bay. The Miners\’ Museum covers fifteen beautiful acres of Cape Breton and features some of the island’s most beautiful coasts. While visiting the museum be sure to participate in an underground tour of the Ocean Deeps Colliery (an actual coal mine located beneath the museum). You will be guided by retired coal miners and will be entertained as well as informed while partaking in one of Cape Breton’s greatest customs.
