Don Pepin Blue Label Cigar Review
Don Pepin Blue Label cigars are one of many potent full-bodied, full-flavored extravaganzas produced by Don Pepin and his nimble-fingered cast of very talented cigar rolling and blending experts. Don Pepin, who has been involved in the cigar business since he was a boy of 11 in Cuba, has revolutionized the full-body cigar market. Both a master roller and master blender, Don Pepin is certainly making his mark on the industry today.
To Don Pepin, creating fine cigars is not enough; it is noticeable that he is as concerned with the look and presentation of each cigar that bears his name. In honor of his Cuban roots, Don Pepin’s Blue Label cigars closely resemble their Cuban cousins. The wrapper is an oily Nicaraguan Corojo Oscuro leaf, which has the mottled appearance of leather with a rich cinnamon cast and the feel of silk in spite of its slight veininess. With its traditional Cuban look, the exterior of the cigar is picture perfect with no braggadocio or apparent gimmicks to draw the eye: none are necessary.
The band says it all: it is blue with elegant gold lettering displaying the words “Don Pepin Garcia” in gold on a blue field inside a round red and gold border, and Don Pepin’s signature below the name. Like Pepin himself, each wing bears the U. S. and Cuban flags within overlapping roundels.
The initial cold draw is very giving, with an aroma and taste of pepper and dry hay.
The Don Pepin Blue Label cigar has a very giving draw and produces a nice amount of smoke which has a pleasant aroma. The burn is nice and even, while the light ash holds well, dropping on demand.
Once lighted, you are blown away with a powerful explosion of potent pepper, often called “Pepin Pepper,” in combination with a sweet spiciness. This cigar bursts with power from the first puff and has a long finish that can hit the back of one’s throat. Near the end of the first third, it becomes more medium-bodied with layered flavors of wood, coffee, and nuts with some bitter chocolate sweetness.
It is in the second third of the smoke that the early strong freshly ground pepper and spice flavors mellow into a sweet spice which is encompassed in a heretofore surprising creaminess- moving back and forth between peppery spiciness and a bittersweet chocolate for the remainder of the smoke. Pepper, leather, clove, coffee, cedar, and earth tones are all present in the complex Don Pepin Blue Label line which finally comes to a close with the lingering taste of bittersweet chocolate.
It is true that Don Pepin Blue Label cigars are not for the new cigar enthusiast who has yet to develop his or her palate, and they are certainly not recommended as morning smokes on an empty stomach. However, experienced connoisseurs who enjoy fuller-bodied cigars ARE in for a treat with Don Pepin’s Blue Label line. They have amassed quite a fan club among cigar aficionados even in the short time Don Pepin has been producing his own lines. We can only wait in eager expectation of his new releases.
