In 2009, the Tatuaje Ambos Mundos Cigars were released into the market. This was done to meet the demand for a value-priced smoke. Brand owner Pete Johnson, working from Jaime Garcia’s Nicaraguan factory, invented this cigar. The name, “Ambos Mundos” meaning “both worlds,” originates from the fact that the cigar comes in either an Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper or a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper. In order to cut production prices, Jamie Garcia uses Nicaraguan long fillers that do not make the cut for Pete’s Tatuaje line. In other words, the Tatuaje Ambos Mundos uses B and C grade tobaccos. For example, a tobacco that has been blemished with a water mark may be used to make the wrapper.

The Tatuaje Ambos Mundos cigar has been described by many reviewers as being less intense than the average Tatuaje. The two wrappers have two distinctively different tastes– both being of medium plus body.

One review describes the Habano Toro as having the classic Cuban triple cap. The medium brown wrapper is described as having a slightly coarse feel, which it makes it a bit toothy. The wrapper has a sheen that results from oils coming through the cigar.

The Tatuaje Ambos Mundos takes a small hit in the reviews when it comes to grading the wrapper. This is absolutely nothing to be concerned about, especially when we consider the remarkable price point. There are also many tiny veins that are seen. Tatuajes are packed in boxes of 25 and are available in 2 sizes: 5×50 Robusto and 6×50 Toro.

At cold draw, the head has a notable taste of spice. The pre-light draw is very nice, mixing smells of hay and spice. At first draw, there are notes of earth with subtle spice on the finish. The spice picks up speed after a minute or two, and then begins to fluctuate. A complimenting coffee tone now mixes in with the earthy flavor.

The first third burns evenly. This produces an extremely nice amount of smoke, and it has a great draw. The ash is compact, but not enough to hold for very long.

As you get into the second third, the flavors continue to be mostly earth and spice. A subtle, dry toastiness pops emerges into the mix to compliment the coffee flavor. The taste of spiciness continues to be strong without being harsh or bitter. The ash is a medium gray. The final third drops the nutty flavor and holds on to its predominating tastes of earth and spice.

The Tatuaje Ambos Mundos comes through for people who love Pete Johnson creations but who also prefer to mind their budget as well. The tobacco is still grown on the Tatuaje farm and soil, as are all other tobaccos made by Johnson. It is good to know that even the lower grade bails used are still good tobacco but might require more time to kick back in your humidor. Getting a Pete Johnson creation that does not skimp on flavor at an affordable price truly is the best of “both worlds”.
