The media is often seen to report that there is an outbreak of some kind of pest in certain areas of the country etc. One of these is the Orkin ad which is extremely graphing about termites etc. However, for those who still remain unsure about whether they have an infestation of some kind or another, it might be wise to contact a company of exterminators direct and get some advice ‘right from the horses’ mouth’ so to speak.

One of the most destructive pests around must be the mighty termite. This tiny creature can do so much damage that it becomes unbelievable. Left alone, this creature can bring all its buddies along to chow down on our precious wood and leave the place, our home, falling down eventually. Indeed, so clever is it that it lays a lovely scent trail for the colony to follow to this very good food source and this is why it is important to stop them before the whole nest comes for dinner! One way to spot them is to tap wood all around the house to see if it sounds hollow. If it does, then it is likely that they are already in situ. They eat wood from the inside out so it is only when this sound is heard that people realize that they have unwanted guests. By this time, of course, some damage has been done but at least the homeowner can now take some action.

Experts in this field have several ways of warding off the termite but they will never be able to eradicate them completely. The very least they can do is to protect the home for some years so that these creatures do not find a way in. The original method of doing stopping these pests involved digging a deep trench around the house so that toxic chemicals could be poured in. This would create a chemical barrier that these little guys would not cross over. They would then simply turn tail and go somewhere else to get their food.

This proved to be efficient for some time but another method was obviously needed since the garden would be virtually destroyed. In fact, there is another method for pushing them back and this comes in the form of feeding tubes which can be left in situ, albeit in a very subtle way, so that the poisoned bait can be topped up when necessary.

Long feeding tubes are sunk into the ground every couple of feet and these too will circle the building to be protected. Down in the tube will be placed food so that the termites feed on it. By laying the scent trails, this termite attracts his colony friends and they all come to feed at the same place.

The clever part here is that the termites will carry the food back to the colony which will eventually kill every one of them off. By monitoring the tubes, bait can be added whenever it is necessary and the householder will have no more unwanted visitors, or disruption either. Clever stuff!
