A Child\’s Development

As children get older, the learn how to express themselves as individuals and make many decisions and choices. These choices can range from whom they make friends with, to their clothes, what hobbies they like, music and a wide range of social issues. Generally, they start developing an innate sense of wanting to find out things for themselves and therefore test their likes and dislikes and independently form ideas about life without adult supervision. Generally they may start by rejecting the values of their parents and also end up challenging their rules and as a result push limits that may have placed on them by adults and society in general.

As children get to their teenagers years, they have a tendency of changing constantly. They may start by being helpful one moment and then start being rude the next moment. When children are in their teenage years they sometimes want to be left alone so that they can have a chance of keeping their thoughts to themselves. If you teenager is experiencing this, the best thing that you can do as a parent is to let them know that their thoughts and feelings are extremely important. Also as they starting to talk, give them a chance to express themselves. Also make sure you pay attention to them. Many teenagers feel extremely disappointed and frustrated when parents don’t listen and understand them.

As teenagers mature up, they have a tendency of experiencing a lot of conflicting and contradictory messages from the media, peers and their parents. Since many teenagers are trying to get a sense of belonging, they typically have lots of pressure to e.g. perform academically or even do things that are questionable with their peers. This can end up being very complicated with adolescents depending on their family situations, neighborhoods that they live in and if they are exposed to drugs or alcohol. It is very important that they be provided with guidance, support and counseling. Without this many teenagers are likely to indulge themselves in certain behavior that may put them and others at risk. These risky habits and behavior are bound to jeopardize any child’s ability to grow into a responsible adult. Sometimes these habits can often time’s lead to end up in social isolation, depression and eventually suicide.

It very important that as children grow, that their parents develop a sense of confidence in their child. As often times as possible every parent should strive to praise their children. Often time’s teens are unlikely to indulge in risky habits if they have parents who provide emotional support and also define clear expectations for their children. It is also vital for a parent to keep in constant communication with their children’s teachers. Also they should ensure that their children are involving themselves in many positive activities to avoid any level of boredom.

As a parent it is always tempting for one to have unrealistic expectations for their children. It is very important for a parent to know that there is no way to prevent children from making any type of mistakes. Mistakes do happen. It is important for the parent to ensure that when the children make mistakes, discipline is given with a measure of ‘grace’.
