Signs You Have a Rodent Problem

If you suspect you might have a pest problem, there are plenty of ways to figure it out one and for all. There are usually plenty of symptoms in your home when you are infested. The symptoms depend on what is causing the infestation, but in some cases, the signs are the same. It does not matter if the problem is rats, bats, bugs, or mice. You will know something is off-kilter about your home and that something needs be to be done about it. You can always call an exterminator, but you might not need exterminating unless the problem is really there. You can confirm you have a problem by checking out a few things or call a professional to do a complete inspection, just to be safe.

An infestation is present if you are seeing droppings. This is one of the most obvious signs of a problem. They are often found in food storage areas, as well as in cabinets and drawers. Rodents and pests like to move in covered spaces where it is hard for them to be found by domestic pets and other predators. There might also be droppings along walls, under the sink or on top of wall beams. Look near places where there might be a nest or in areas with a lot of hiding spaces. For bugs, you might find droppings in bed or on counters and in bathtubs.

One of the main reasons pests enter your home in the first place is to find food. They smell food inside of your home and at night they creep out in search of your stash. You might find food containers or boxes that have been nibbled. Some pests are able to chew through plastic, so Tupperware and plastic bags will do little to protect your food supply. If you have a recurring problem, store your food in glass containers. If you notice for the first time there are nibbled boxes or storage containers, you need to call a pro to eliminate the problem.

Food containers are not all they nibble on. They also chew on fabric, wood, paper and other materials. This is especially the case for mice and rats. Their teeth are always growing, so they have to chew to keep the growth under control. They might even chew on your home furnishings. If you are dealing with bugs, there might be signs of them burrowing or chewing like wood shavings. Anywhere there is a pile of sawdust; there is probably an infestation of some kind.

The final indicator you have a pest problem is the presence of odd noises and odd smells. When a closed-in space is infested, there will be a strange musky odor. Most professionals are able to recognize the smell instantaneously and if you have been infested before, it should be easy to recognize. Another indicator is hearing unusual noises at night. There might be scratches or bumps in the attic or elsewhere in your home. Rodents are nocturnal; you will hear them at night when it is quiet moving around.
