Common Exterior French Doors

Exterior French doors are among the most popular choices of homeowners due to their appeal to whoever sees them. They are large doors that are as stylish as anything that you would expect from something influenced by the culture of the French. However, there is more to this type of door than just their beauty. They are designed as double-layered doors; one, which can be opened inwards while the other, can open outwards.

French doors though can be installed outside and even inside the home. They can be used inside as a door in the dining room or outside as a patio door. But if you are more interested in doors that can be used outdoors, they are available in several types. The most common exterior French doors that you can find are those with glazed or stained glass or those that have decorative edges. They are good insulators due to their double-paned glass. The most common types of French doors for exterior use are hinged exterior door, bi-fold and multi-fold door, and pocket exterior French door.

Hinged Exterior French door
This is composed of two double doors that are hinged to open them into or out of the room. For a patio door, this can be a swinging door that can conveniently open to the patio. This type of French door is also available with ornate wood or decorative metal as the main material. However, the clear or decorative glass is likely a permanent element in a French door. For low maintenance doors, you can find one that is made of metal or vinyl without any glass incorporated to the door.

Bi-fold or Multi-fold French Door
This is a door with accordion style. Their hinges connect its panels together. The panels are mounted on a sliding track so they can slide to one side and folded to help save space. Folding doors are stylish and successfully attractive when installed at home. A bi-folding door has two panels, while a multi-folding door usually has three to four panels. These French doors are helpful in saving space at home while protecting the interiors of the home from the weather condition outdoors.

Pocket Exterior French door
This is best used in a home with a small space that can barely allow a door to swing open and close. It does not consume so much space because this can slide into wall on any side of the door. This is also ideally used as a patio door if you only have a small patio. A pocket exterior French door is an effective space saver. Even a small space can look a bit spacious when you have this door installed on the exterior of your home. However, you still need to give the pockets of this door enough space when they will slide into the wall. Its installation will need a special construction so you may want to hire a professional contractor to do the work. This door can still effectively protect your home from the elements.
