Choosing a Moving Company

Everyone knows these are hard times but what, if any, are the advantages of using a cheap moving company?

I guess the main one is …..they are cheap. Cheap doesn\’t necessarily translate into better nor does it always mean the best overall deal. When shopping for quotes for a house mover it is best to have a list of \’wants\’ and \’must haves\’ ready. For example if you have to move by a certain date what guarantees are there in place to make sure your mover does actually turn up on your moving day?

Are packing crates or boxes included in the deal? These can work out as quite expensive if you have to buy them. Be aware during the quotation process that all quotes are based on the same offering so you are able to compare like with like. If you have something especially large, heavy or valuable (maybe all three if you own an expensive piano) what is each company quoting offering as far insurance coverage? and what happens should the worst happen and something gets damaged?

All companies aren\’t created equal and yes one company may be trying extra hard to get work by offering to undercut their competitors but how experienced are their employees?

Some moving companies will pick and choose from an assortment of available workers when times get busy. From a \’cheap\’ company there may be no guarantee of how experienced the crew that arrives on moving day will be.

You may feel \’picky\’ or \’nosy\’ but finding out what percentage of permanent and temporary staff the company employs may be a good pointer as to how their business ethics work. The more stable long established moving companies will offer their staff overtime bonuses and operate fully within not only the letter but the spirit of employment laws.

It is easy for unscrupulous moving companies to hire and fire workers as they see fit, especially in today\’s uncertain job market. The question you have to ask yourself how safe your possessions will feel with potentially inexperienced workers moving your valued possessions for you?

Do not feel that every company that offers a cheap move will be cutting corners as well as costs however before agreeing on a final price try to have any quotations written and confirmed. Don\’t make snap judgements but get three written quotations and, if the company you prefer to use are a reputable moving company they will offer testimonials as to their quality of service.

If you are unable to move straight away into your new house, how accommodating is each mover going to be about your move. Some will offer to delay your onward shipping a few days by juggling their transit movements, others may offer a period of free or reduced rate storage.

Finally, it is always far better to plan ahead and be in a position to take your time than be searching around at the last minute for a company that has the capacity to move your belongings at short notice. It is likely that the best removal companies will book their work in advance as they should be in a position to pick and choose their work.
