Saving Money on Luggage Fees

The more expensive travel becomes, the more travelers look for ways to save. There are plenty of discounts available for travel that range from airline tickets to hotel discounts and coupons for attractions. Even with these discounts, planning a vacation still costs a lot of money. The airlines are doing little to help bring things under control. In addition to elevating trip tickets and the cost of making last minute changes, airlines are also charging for checked baggage. Just a short time ago, passengers were able to check at least one bag for free. This meant you could pack everything you needed into a bag and not worry about carrying it or wheeling it once you were checked into your flight. These days, most airlines charge a baggage fee for only one bag. There are numerous ways to get around this without ruining your vacation. Start by purchasing private label luggage with a telescoping handle system. This will make transporting your bags easier.

Start by trying to pack all that you can into your carry-on bag. This is the baggage you will take onto the plane with you. Most airlines allow travelers to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item, such as a laptop computer or purse. When traveling for a short period of time, it is usually fairly easy to fit all of your belongings into a carry-on bag. Just remember there are limits on the amount of liquids you can carry through the security check-points at the airport.

If you are traveling for a longer period of time, you might need more space than just a carry-on bag. If traveling with someone else, combine your checked items into one bag. This way you can split the fee in half. Of course if you are traveling with a spouse, splitting the fee is not all that effective when it comes to saving money. Also remember that combining items means the bag will be heavier. Airlines charge hefty fees for overweight bags, so it might be cheaper to just pay for an additional bag.

Upgrading to first class or business class usually entitles you to a free checked bag. You are paying more for your ticket, but you get additional benefits. Think of it this way. You book your airline ticket for $100. You have the option of upgrading for $40. The normal fee for one checked bag is $20, but you get to check the bag for free by upgrading. Essentially, you are paying only $20 for more leg room, better service, easy exiting, and a more comfortable seat.

Finally, consider shipping your stuff in advance. In most cases, this is not the most economical option. You also run the risk of items not arriving in time for your arrival. However, there are situations in which this is the best option. Those planning a destination wedding might want to have wedding clothes and other items shipped in advance. Insure the items when shipping. This saves you the frustration of taking your bridal gown and accessories through security and onto the plane, while also having to pay extra for checking all of the wedding essentials you are sure to need.
