When to Call the Exterminator

So what happens when you find a nest of bed bugs living in your mattress? Do you immediately call Terminix or some other pest control service? The last thing anyone wants to become is food for bed bugs. Unfortunately, these sneaky creatures are equipped to get away with feeding on your for quite some time before you actually start to notice the problem. When bed bugs bite, they release a substance that numbs the skin as they feed. Therefore, you do not feel anything until after they have come and gone. It may be weeks before signs that bed bugs have been making a meal of you actually begin to appear on your skin. If you have a problem with bed bugs, it is a good idea to do a little research before tackling the problem. In the end, however, you may simply resolve to call an exterminator, who will be able to demolish the infestation in the most time-tested manner available today.

Before first world countries began using insecticides like DDT and chlordane, bed bugs were a common problem. After World War II and the widespread use of these pest controls, the world began seeing less of the blood sucking bugs. For decades afterward, bed bugs have hardly been an issue for anyone living in the United States. That is, until now. In recent years bed bugs have reemerged in great numbers, and no one knows for sure why this is happening. Because the problem did not exist in recent decades, people were not really sure what to do when they found a problem, and were not equipped to recognize the problem. This may have contributed to the fact that these pests are thriving today.

Bed bugs can be very problematic, especially if an infestation has grown to epic proportions. These pests can reproduce at high rates, filling your mattress with hundreds of eggs at a time. It is important to act quickly if you do find an infestation. Another trait of these pests which makes an infestation so difficult to tackle is that they are able to crawl into tiny cracks and hide for up to a year without feeding. As you can see, this problem can be very difficult to treat on one’s own, and any efforts in doing so may not completely solve the issue. One good do-it-yourself method is steam cleaning. By steam cleaning any furniture where bed bugs are living, you will be able to kill many of them. The bugs cannot survive high temperatures, but it is important to clean slowly to ensure that the mattress stays warm for at least 20 minutes.

Calling an exterminator will be beneficial in that many services will come back if you find that the problem still exists. When dealing with bed bugs, it is important to realize they may return.
