Thyroid Replacement In Fibromyalgia And CFS. Generic Thyroid, Thyroxine And The Hypothalamic Pituitary Axis. Part 1
I have talked in great detail about the effects of failed lymphatic function and the vicious cycle of mitochondrial and lymphatic failure that are at the root of the ill effects of the fatigue illnesses, Fibromyalgia and CFS.
What is encouraging for CFS and Fibromyalgia sufferers has to be the continued progress of science and research often by practitioners who have first hand experience and a particular interest in treating these illnesses.
The Thyroid Factor.
As part of the multifactorial failures we see in Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue sufferers, ultimately, a lack of Thyroxine T4 and Triiodothyronine T3 appears to play a large part in preventing effective repair and recovery of the mitochondria themselves. While the mitochondria are misfiring the energy required for healing to begin is simply inadequate.
T3 is the active form of thyroid hormone, the form that can be efficiently utilized by the body and is up to 20 times more bio-available than T4.
T4 is generated directly by the thyroid gland under orders from the pituitary and hypothalamus. T4 entering the bloodstream is converted to T3 partly by the tissues surrounding the thyroid gland, but largely by the liver.
There is particular interest concerning CFS and Fibromyalgia sufferers in a type of hypothyroidism caused by the lack of an enzyme that is involved in the conversion of T4 into T3.
Without this enzyme adequate T4 may be produced by the thyroid, but this can fail to convert into T3, the form that the body can actually use.
The muscles in particular are badly affected by a lack of T3 in many Fibromyalgia sufferers.
Without adequate T3 the mitochondria themselves have inadequate oxygen to allow the mitochondrial cell walls to return to normal function.
This means that patients who are undergoing lymphatic treatment to reduce internal toxicity while simultaneously attempting to restore mitochondrial function with the metabolic protocol and supplements can still be left short of full recovery.
The treatment option at this stage is simply to add in levothyroxine T4 and/ or Armour Thyroid.
With thyroid replacement therapy there are really only 2 options.
. T4 – Levothyroxine.
. T3/T4 combination – Armour Thyroid.
Adding in Thyroxine in this way you are replacing the natural thyroid that is produced by your own thyroid gland but you can control the levels more accurately with the thyroid replacement.
But what is the true etiology of these thyroid deficiencies?
Is adding in extra T3/T4 a really effective strategy?
There is a long tiresome debate concerning thyroid replacement treatment methodology.
Traditional endocrinologists argue that treating a thyroid that is not truly damaged but is receiving incorrect data from the hypothalamic/ pituitary axis is dangerous and illogical.
CFS and Fibromyalgia doctors and patients know that whatever is happening with the HPA, increasing thyroid hormones is an extremely effective method of restoring normal function to damaged mitochondria which allows the deep healing process to really start firing.
It also acts quickly to arrest the vicious cycle of decline that CFS and Fibromyalgia sufferers experience.
After so many years living in morbidity this is often enough for many sufferers to move onto thyroxine replacement and if this is ineffective due to poor enzymatic conversion of T4 to T3, you should then try Armour Thyroid or equivalent.
Again in the muddy waters of thyroid replacement therapy Armour Thyroid itself is also the subject of various heated debates within the medical profession.
Armour thyroid is made directly from desiccated pigs thyroid glands but some believe that Armour Thyroid pills cannot guarantee an absolutely precise prescription dose of the required hormones within every single pill.
Armour Thyroid has been used to treat thyroid patients successfully in different forms for hundreds of years and taking a physiological does of both hormones works better for the majority of thyroid patients rather than the synthetic versions that the pharmaceutical companies produce.
CFS and Fibromyalgia sufferers may conclude incorrectly that thyroid deficiency is at the heart of their illness and take a course of action purely aimed at restoring thyroid function.
This strategy alone is inadequate:
New research in Holland reveals what is yet another vicious cycle leading to the multitude of knock on effects that we see so often in CFS and Fibromyalgia patients.
These are the vicious cycles that result ultimately in the baffling array of symptoms that patients present and which in turn makes treatment so complicated, difficult and baffling for doctors and therapists.
But we are getting ever closer to understanding the core system insults and failures and so developing treatment strategies based on real organic changes in the body.
This latest research is particularly welcome and dovetails with my vicious cycle of fatigue theory.
In the rest of this 4 part series i examine the new research that shows how a highly toxic gas is implicated in these illnesses.
This gas can have a negative knock on effect on many other organ systems, and i detail how to treat, prevent, and repair the damage and restore CFS and Fibromyalgia sufferers to full health.Clive Haslam\’s Scientific New Research into Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – Proven, Highly Effective, Practical and Affordable Treatment Strategies.
