Leaky Gut And Immune Dysfunction In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome And Fibromyalgia. Part 2
Cutting edge research from Dr Meirlier in Holland has revealed some of the key vicious cycles of negative knock on effects that we see in Chronic Fatigue (CFS) and Fibromyalgia patients.
These same vicious cycles ultimately result in the baffling array of symptoms that patients present which in turn makes treatment so complicated, difficult and frustrating for sufferers, their doctors and complementary therapists.
But with every passing month we are getting ever closer to understanding the core system insults and failures, and with this improved knowledge comes superior treatment strategies and advanced protocols based on addressing real organic changes in the body.
This latest research is particularly welcome and aligns itself with the vicious downward cycle of Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia theories.
In so many CFS and Fibromyalgia patients digestive, gut and intestinal problems are a mainstay of the symptoms presented.
Many patients declare some form of digestive, intestinal or bowel dysfunction pre or post onset of the recognized trigger for their current condition.
In the early stages of CFS and Fibromyalgia illnesses many patients will have taken broad spectrum antibiotic regimes aimed at wholesale elimination of dangerous or bad bacteria from the gut. Lymes disease and other borrelial or spirochetal infections can mimic fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms.
Subsequently these patients may not have been correctly advised to follow up the broad spectrum antibiotic treatment with a suitable course of probiotics and/ or prebiotics and so they often develop severe intolerance and allergy of various products.
Some CFS and Fibromyalgia patients may have had severe gut viruses like Epstein Barr or Coxsackie strains.
Some patients have descended into Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia with the recognized trigger being an apparent episode of food poisoning or ingesting some other foreign chemical or toxin.
Often, a long history of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Crohns Disease can precede the onset of Chronic Fatigue, or the muscular and joint symptoms associated with a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia.
These digestive and intestinal symptoms often lead to the diagnosis of Leaky Gut.
The theory behind Leaky Gut is that large immunologically active cells can pass across the weakened intestinal wall of the patients gut and enter the bloodstream where they are identified as alien to the host and so activate a powerful immune response.
As the immune system (which is largely based around the intestines) fires repeatedly in this way, sufferers develop a variety of allergies to various foods and substances.
Foods that present particular interest to a Leaky Gut are dairy, gluten, grain, egg and yeast type foods. A host of airborne toxins are also implicated in allergies.
By intensive research into the Leaky Gut theory Dr Meirlier identified that a Leaky Gut reliably produces a by-product gas – Hydrogen Sulphide.
This reaction appears consistently in 80 to 90% of recognized Fibromyalgia and CFS patients with digestive involvement. This gas is harmless in small quantities but very toxic in large quantities as produced by CFS sufferers.
Dr Meirlier\’s research revealed the following data related to excessive H2S production in CFS/ Fibromyalgia sufferers:
H2S is a nasty neuro-toxin, causing light and noise intolerance.
Other negative reactions can be failure of the core energy producing cells the mitochondria, immune depression, low lymphocyte levels, gut bacteria overproduction, a rise in oxidative tissue damage and retention of heavy metals, particularly mercury, in the body.
Mercury is generally recognized as extremely dangerous. In severe CFS and Fibromyalgia cases, sufferers can develop rogue prions which can cause havoc with energy metabolism.
The reason tackling the Leaky Gut is so important is that it could in some cases be directly at the core of a knock-on flow, a downward spiral of symptoms further down a long chain that eventually results in the lymphatic and mitochondrial failure of Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia.
We know already that the sympathetic nervous system is in disarray in fatigue patients. We also know that these systems are largely situated around the gut, the intestines, digestive system and bowel.
In the next part of this series i examine the effects of Leaky Gut and H2S on the Sympathetic nervous system, the direct implications for H2S on the Hypothalamic Pituitary Axis (HPA) and the associated knock on effects for the entire endocrine system and immunity.
Finally I discuss how to treat, prevent, and repair the damage caused by this downward spiral.Clive Haslam\’s Scientific New Research into Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – Proven, Highly Effective, Practical and Affordable Treatment Strategies.
