Beginning a New Business in Resale Furniture – Consignment Store
Certainly you\’ve wanted to start a business of your own at some point in your life. Perhaps that time is now. At this time in our country it\’s a great environment for beginning a consignment shop or resale store. This is true for a couple of reasons. First, there\’s a lot of people looking to generate some cash from household items such as furniture or artwork. Secondly, just about everyone in world is doing whatever they can to save money. Consignment and resale furniture is a perfect way to save money when trying to furnish ones home. Another benefit comes to both the city where the resale store or consignment shop is located and again to the owner or proprietor of the shop. The city or town benefits by the repurposing of furniture and household items that would have otherwise found their way to the landfill. And of course the proprietor benefits by the business opportunity in and of itself.
A resale consignment shop will offer it\’s customers two services and each provide a savings to the user. One is the chance to sell your items in the shop. In this case, the items are accepted under contract to be sold for a predetermined price and a set term. At at least one point in that term, the items that have not yet sold will be reduced in price by a set percentage. Typically at the end of that term, the resale shop will pay the consignor a percentage of the total of all items sold. Keep in mind, not all items sell prior to end of the contract term. Those items that are not sold will still have to be removed from the floor of the consignment shop as the showroom floor space is very valuable and there are always more items on deck to be brought in. In those cases where the consignors merchandise does not sell, it will either be picked up by the consignor, donated to a charity or discarded. Typically if the customer does not tell you at the time the contract is signed of their desire to get their merchandise back, that determination will be up to you, the shop owner as to what to do with unsold merchandise. Developing a relationship with a nearby non-for-profit charity resale store will come in very handy here. It\’s also very important that you make this perfectly clear to the consignor at the time the consignment terms are discussed.
There are a number of consignment store franchises out there, but not as many as one would think. Most seem to focus more on clothing. There is a huge untapped market for franchises in the area of resale furniture though. Finding a franchise can be a huge benefit as you then receive the support of the franchising company behind you. My advice to you, if you\’re new to the business would definitely be to find a franchise in order to help you with the business part of the organization, leaving you to focus on sales and acquiring product to sell. Some of the primary difficulties to running a consignment store is keeping your inventory organized and keeping track of what items belong to what consignor. There is plenty of good software available to help you as a business owner in this area, but quite often the franchise company will provide you with their on proprietary software. Basically without some sort of record keeping software, money will be put in the till with no knowledge of which consignor gets how much. Big problem.
Now I\’m talking here primarily about furniture and household goods, but that doesn\’t mean that you can\’t start you resale shop in some other niche. For instance, if you have a deep knowledge in the field of electronics, then by all means, find a franchise that\’s in that niche. Believe me, they\’re all out there, you just have to find them. What\’s important about having knowledge about the merchandise you\’ll be reselling you ask? Easy, when you need to price the merchandise, if you have no basis as to the original cost of the item, how will you help to sell the merchandise for the consignor. You see, the more you sell the item for, the more both you and the consignor receive in compensation. Knowledge of your inventory and confidence is key when both acquiring and selling your goods. Keep in mind though, just because you start out selling let\’s say, resale furniture and someone asks that you sell a stereo system for them, there\’s nothing to say that you can\’t. That is, as long as it\’s acceptable by the franchising company.
Finally, I\’d like you to know that franchise operation isn\’t for everyone. If you want the freedom to have your own business, but not be married to it, then a franchise is the way to go. They tend to handle much of the tedious business and structure. Then you just sell your merchandise.
As most individuals already understand, starting a franchise can be hard but if you really want to control what you do and the amount of income you earn then by all means, give it a try.Used Furniture, Resale, Resale Furniture & Consignment Resale Furniture, Used furniture, sell your furniture
