How To Get The Attention Of The Teacher/Student In A Disruptive Classroom

Evidently, a classroom can sometimes become an environment that’s not really suitable for learning because of the students that display some disruptive behaviors. As the name suggests, disruptive behaviors refer to behaviors of the students that may negatively affect the learning process inside the classroom. This particular type of behavior may hinder the ability of the teacher to teach her students well and hinder the students to maximize their learning abilities. Eating inside the classroom, creating excessive noise and using mobile phones inside the classroom are just some of the disruptive behaviors that many students do. In addition, in a disruptive classroom, it would be hard for a student to get your attention and as a teacher; it would also be hard for you to get your student’s attention. So to somehow help, here are some ways on how get the attention of the teacher or student in a disruptive classroom.

For a student to get your attention, he/should wait for the time when you are no longer talking or if you are no longer doing anything. In this way, there is a big chance that he/she will be able to get your attention despite of the fact that there are students that are being disruptive. Then the student can raise his/her hand and then call your attention by saying “excuse me’. After this, he/she just have to wait for your acknowledgement.

On the other hand, getting the attention of your students in a disruptive classroom is more difficult than the first situation given. You have to come up with a strategy or find a way to easily catch their attention, keep them quiet and attentive. The best thing that you can actually do when it comes to this case, especially if you are dealing with kids, is to come up with a certain sign or signal that you will use to get their attention. Once you already have decided on the signal to be used, you can explain the meaning of it to your students. This would be really effective especially when the school year is just starting. Another way to get their attention is by using visual clues. There is no need for you to shout or yell at your students because this will just make things even worse. Creating an unusual sound is also a great idea. You can make use of a bell or clap your hands to get your students’ attention. Just make sure that the sound is loud enough so that your students will be able to hear it despite of all the noise that they are creating.

So even if you are in a disruptive classroom, there are still some ways on how you can get your students’ attention or the other way around. After this, you may move forward to finding some ways on how to minimize your students from displaying disruptive behaviors. You might want to set some rules or regulations inside the classroom and be consistent in implementing them. This is a good way to make your students aware that they are not the ones who will always be followed in the classroom.
