There are only a few things that you need to do in order to restore a precious piece of street furniture like a park bench. Here\’s how.

Clean

You will need to prepare the following materials: bristle brush, steel brush, sandpaper, soap and water. You will need a bristle brush. The sandpapers can be found in varying roughness. Use one that is not too smooth but not too rough that your furniture will end up damaged more than restored. You may need sandpapers of 50, 80 or 120 grits to fully remove the loose paint. Take a steel brush to remove further dirt and dust. It can also be used for aluminium street furniture. You will also need other cleaning materials such as soap or other cleaning solutions. Make sure to wash off the debris, which might have gotten stuck in the furniture\’s surface, from the furniture with soap and water.

Repair

You will also need to repair the furniture if needed. Examine the furniture. Look for broken wood boards at the seat and back rest. For wooden park benches, you can use wood glue or wood clamps. You will need to leave the furniture overnight if you will use wood glue. You should also look for holes in various parts of the park bench. You should fill in those holes. If there are certain parts that are completely destroyed, you can opt to remove and replace them.

Refinish

Sandblasting is another choice. It will surely make your street furniture looking like new again. The sandblasting can definitely help a lot in improving the street furniture\’s appearance.

The next step is the application of water-based sealer. It will serve as primer. It is important to apply a primer because it helps in the drying procedure. Paint dries faster when there is a primer underneath. It could also help you in getting an even layer of paint. Lastly, the colour of paint will be at its best when there is a primer underneath.

When applying paint, you need to ensure that areas you do not want to be painted are covered. Your floor or grass should also be covered. You need to do at least two coating but make sure that you will not exceed four coatings. In fact, three or four coatings are more applicable to metal street furniture than wooden. The latter absorbs paint much faster.

After painting, you will also need to apply sealant. Do not forget this step if you do not want your street furniture to have rust easily.
