How to Improve Your Memory by Changing Your Daily Habits

Do Not Be Alarmed.

As people begin to have more and more incidences of memory loss, we begin to grow more and more worried. However, there is probably no need for alarm. Fortunately, there are many ways in which we can exercise our memory, rather than simply accepting an ailing memory as simple fact.

Regardless of age, or stage of life, there are many methods that are effective for all peoples that can be incorporated into any lifestyle. The busy professional twenty-something, or the homemaking parent can both benefit equally.

Things We Forget.

The brain is a complex organ, and it stores different types of information in its different parts. We store countless bits of information in our brains, and we expect all of the information to be available at a moment\’s notice: telephone numbers, birthdays, appointments. Unfortunately, at times our memories are unable to immediately drudge up the information we are looking for.

Often times, the things we forget are pesky, but don\’t necessarily disrupt our life on a large scale. For instance, one might end up looking for the coffee cup that they are drinking out of, or search for the pen that is actually in one\’s pocket. This is inconvenient, but other times, we forget bigger things like the birthday of a spouse, or appointment that we\’ve been waiting for.

What You Can Do.

The neighbors might wonder what you are doing when they see you with an X drawn on your hand, or when they notice the knot you sometimes wear in a handkerchief. But looking a little funny every now and again might be worthwhile. These strategies, or other ones (that more specifically fit your personal needs) could be an effective way to your improved memory.

By way of deviating your environment, there is a visual reminder created. After deviating your environment, take the time to form a visual connection between that which you have changed, and that which you are attempting to remember. Look at that X drawn on your hand, and think simultaneously about why it is you have placed your coat at another place than you used to..

You may also want to do something like switching on which hand you are wearing a watch or bracelet. The method that you choose is not nearly as important as choosing something that works well for you.

More Examples.

If you drive to work I the morning, and you know that on the way home you need to pick up your grandson from school, there are some things to help you remember to run the after-work errand. It might be a worthwhile strategy for you to put an empty coffee cup on your dashboard, or put something on the steering wheel where it does not normally lay. This way, after arriving to your vehicle and seeing something askew, the unusual object should catch your notice and prompt you to remember that there is a grandson waiting to be picked up.

There is another method of memory retention that is called: visualization and association. This method entails the transformation of images into words in order to help one remember the words. For instance, if you leave your coffee cup on the dresser, it would be wise to take a moment to envision the coffee cup getting dressed. Later, when you\’re wondering where your coffee cup is, the image of your coffee cup getting dressed will come to mind.

Move Your Body.

Doing simple exercises can be an effective method of increasing your memory\’s ability.

Doing something as simple as taking a brief break to walk around the block can be a big help to your brain. Simple things like walking up and down the stairs, or walking around the office or neighborhood can be a great help to your brain.

In Summation.

The strategies underlined herein can be incorporated into the daily life of any person. When employed in daily life, these tips can become habit. After turning them to habit, the things with which you once may have struggled will become much easier.
