A Tourist’s Guide to Florence
Florence is one of the most important cities in Europe. It was the birthplace of the Italian renaissance, and Florentines invented opera, renaissance and neo-classical architecture, and florins, which were basically the first example of proper modern currency. Great advancements in the fields of science and political science were made in Florence during this period. It is a city not only of huge historic significance, but also a beautiful and charming place to visit, with excellent shops and restaurants.
Best Time to Travel
Tuscany gets very hot at the height of summer, and most local people retreat from the cities to the coast in the hottest months of July and Ausust. For the most favorable weather, try the beginning or end of the summer, May, June and September are usually sunny and warm but not oppressively hot.
Amazing Attractions to See
The Duomo di Firenze, or the cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore, is the beautiful cathedral that stands in the center of Florence and dominates the city. Adjacent to the cathedral is Giotto\’s Tower, which you can climb for a beautiful view of the entire city as well as the Duomo itself. If you want to combine your history with some luxury shopping, the beautiful Ponte Vecchio (literally “old bridge”) is lined with shops, and traditionally a place to buy jewelry. Some churches of interest include Santa Croce, which contains the tombs of many well known historical figures such as Machiavelli, Galileo, Dante and Michelangelo, and Santa Maria Novella, which is full of beautiful artwork.
Exquisite and Delicious Restaurants
As with most Italian cities, the food in the restaurants is pretty much exclusively Italian style, though this does not limit you to pizza and pasta, there are also delicious meat and fish dishes available in a traditional Tuscan style. Food tends to be seasonal, local produce and is delicious whether you opt for cheap snacks brought from kiosks or dinner in an expensive restaurant like Il Cibreo near to Santa Croce which offers delightful Tuscan food in beautiful surroundings. If you are on a budget, pizzerias are always a safe bet and there is no shortage of them to be found around Florence, you can even choose a restaurant where you can sit outside and eat your pizza in the piazza looking at the Duomo. Local wine is excellent, and very reasonably priced, so why not try some delicious Tuscan wine with your meal?
Going Places in Florence
Florence itself is not a large city, and you can see the important sites and visit the best bars and restaurants all by walking if you have a hotel central to the city. Florence does have a large train station though, and trains in Italy are very cheap, so you may want to take advantage of this and catch a train to reasonably nearby Pisa to see the leaning tower, or to any of the other beautiful Tuscan towns you can access easily from Florence itself. It is also easy to hire a car in Italy, so if you plan to visit a lot of places outside of central Florence, this can be a cheap and convenient option.
