Diabetes, also known as diabetes mellitus, has become a modern malady that has been affecting people of all ages, all over the world, for the last decade. A few decades back, diabetes was prevalent only among people above the ages of 50 to 55. Unfortunately, these days, young men and women in their 30\’s are getting affected by diabetes. The 4 major types of diabetes are type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and congenital diabetes.
What are the main causes of diabetes?
Diabetes is caused by low levels of insulin in the body. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas that keeps the sugar or glucose levels under check. The body only requires a certain amount of sugar to be healthy, and insulin makes sure that excess sugar is removed from the blood. Reduced insulin levels result in excess storage of sugar in the blood, which is highly toxic.
In type 1 diabetes, also known as insulin-dependent diabetes), the body is unable to produce the required insulin levels due to which people have to frequently inject insulin. In type 2 diabetes, there is an adequate amount of insulin produced, but the cells are unable to use them sufficiently. It is also known as insulin-resistant diabetes. On the other hand, gestational diabetes occurs in pregnant women, mostly during the third trimester stage, when adequate insulin is not secreted. In congenital diabetes, newborns have a genetic defect that leads to inadequate secretion of insulin.
Why do people get diabetes?
A sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and old age are the main causes of diabetes. The lifestyle that most people lead has a lot to be desired. To be healthy, the body requires a minimum of 10 minutes of stress-free exercise every day. A sedentary lifestyle invariably leads to a complete lack of physical fitness, obesity, and a general weakening of the immune system, which makes the body susceptible to diseases.
Regular exercise increases the oxygen levels in the body which in turn helps the blood glucose levels under check. Exercise is a habit that takes a long time to cultivate. Unfortunately, not many of us are able to find time off from a daily hectic schedule. This is a mjor factor that contributes to later-life diabetes.
Our daily diet, with the amount of exercise we do every day over a long period of time, determines how healthy or unhealthy we are. A lot of people tend to skip meals due to a busy schedule at the office and try to compensate by having a heavy meal the next time. The body needs regular food intake throughout the day. A skipped meal leads to decreased metabolism and the body tends to gain, which could lead to obesity.
A basic lack of awareness about diabetes among people is a big concern. Most people are under the impression that diabetes is caused only by consuming too much of sugar products and try to avoid them and eat a lot of fast food and processed food. Consuming nutritious food like fruits and vegetables on a regular basis reduces the chances of diabetes.
Stress and lack of sleep are indirect causes of diabetes and act as a trigger. It is important to note that diabetes is not a disease but only a condition that requires a disciplined lifestyle. One can live a long, healthy life with diabetes. However, it would be wise for people to totally prevent diabetes by having a healthy lifestyle and good lifestyle habits from a very young age.
