Wedding Cakes an Integral Part of the Pomp and Ceremony

Dating back to Roman times there are documented references to wedding cakes. Surrounded by myths, many which have fortunately been abandoned, these pieces of confectionery have a long association with marriage ceremonies. In those early years the bride\’s cake as it was known was either made of bread, biscuits or a meat pie.

It is only in the 19th century that a plain one tiered cake was introduced as a wedding cake. Bakers are able to create huge elaborate designs without fear of the entire structure collapsing.

Originally made of fruit and spices many brides today choose to have something different. Delicious mousse, vanilla sponge, carrot or cream cheese cakes are often preferred. These serve a dual purpose as official marriage confection and dessert for the reception.

If the bride does not want an actual cake a mock-up dummy is iced and filled with chocolates, marzipan fruits or individually wrapped pieces of fruit cake. Pyramids of chocolate eclairs or cup cakes are trendy chic alternatives to traditional confections.

By tradition the top tier is often frozen or stored in another manner to be eaten either on the first anniversary or at the christening or naming ceremony of their first child. The top tier decoration, since the middle of the last century, has been a miniature groom and bride. These small figurines symbolized their togetherness and becoming a united couple.

The modern trend is to have a replica in miniature of the bridal bouquet or some other floral decoration. Either fresh or fondant flowers are used to make these centerpiece. Shared hobbies or other interests are sometimes incorporated in the making of a wedding topper.

The design, content and decoration of wedding cakes are a personal choice. Just as every young girl has dreamt about her wedding and the dress she will wear, so too has she given the cake serious thought and planned its design and decoration.
