The Use and Workings of a Furnace
The word: \”furnace\” originates from the Latin word for oven. This is the word: \”fornax\” as it is spelled in Latin. These are relied on in homes and in industry settings today. People have come to depend on them in their homes all over the civilized world as a means of providing heating and hot water.They are used for a variety of industrial processes. Some uses today include: providing a heat source for fractional distillation, the extraction of metals from their ore, processing in oil refineries and for making chemicals.
Boilers, are furnaces which are used in many homes now. They enable liquid to be heated and sometimes boiled. Usually water or oil is used, to carry the heat from one place to another. There are gasses produced in this system which must eventually be released outside of the house. These boilers have gained popularity as they heat the house, while at the same time provide hot water.
In the past, people would burn coal and wood or oil. This would ensure their homes were warm, and they could cook hot food or have hot water to bath in. Some furnaces still utilize this range of substances today. Fossil fuel usage has been restricted in most countries. They have been replaced in the main, by cleaner more environmentally friendly technologies. Although some carbon inefficient fuel, is still used in some manufacturing plants.
Many homes today in the USA, have boilers which run on natural gas. In places where electricity is cheap to produce, electrical resistance is used in the system. All furnaces have three main components to their make up. This is comprised of: the burner, the controls and the air movement.
The flame, is drawn to the heat exchange by a draft. Gases which are made during the process, encourage heat to increase inside a metal structure. The most efficient systems take any remaining heat from the gases before releasing them.
In the next part of the process, the gas which is no longer required can be released outside. Heating which has been produced is distributed through out the home via pipes and radiators. The system is advantageous due to the fact that, both hot water and heating can be derived from the same process. The downside is that if the system suffers a failure, both the heating and the hot water will stop being produced.
The basic idea of how a furnace works, is similar in industrial settings. Industrial practices can employ a range of different designs of furnace, which can change with the manufacturing purpose. This said, industrial furnaces do share some common characteristics with the more common home boilers.
In the industrial furnace, the fuel gets loaded into the burner. Here it mixes with the air, like in the home boiler. This part of the process is called the radiant section. The warm gases have the excess heat removed and that is passed back into the system before the gas is finally allowed to escape.
