The power of concentration to improve the quality of your memory is enormous. There\’s no denying that the world is becoming more and more fast-paced and technology-oriented. It takes focusing on something for eight seconds for it to be transformed to the long-term memory.
With all the things going on in our lives, it is no surprise that we do not often take those necessary eight seconds to transfer information to the long-term memory.
Everyone has experienced putting their keys down somewhere absent-minded, and later ended up forgetting where the keys are. Looking for the keys later becomes a giant time waster. However, we can all take a moment out, and better remember where are keys are, and other details about our lives.
Focus Yourself.
When you are doing things, even things that you view as insignificant, focus. It is easy to forget things if we do not pay attention to what we are doing. To counter this, it\’s an effective tool to say aloud what you are doing while you are doing it. Don\’t worry about the funny look your nephew gives you when you say aloud “I\’m putting the car keys down on the bed.”
Avoid Distractions.
Even if there is a radio on broadcasting the latest sports scores, or a television on in the background playing your favorite sitcom, focus on what you are doing. As mentioned, we live in an increasingly face-paced world. Try to cut out the distractions that come along with that, and pay attention to what you are doing.
The Power of Reading and Writing.
Pick up the local newspaper, or a magazine that interests you, and don\’t underestimate the importance of literature. While you are reading, make a conscious effort to focus on what you are reading, and pay attention to the details. When you are done, quiz yourself and see how well you are able to remember them.
Otherwise, one of the most effective methods of remembering something is actually teaching it. Regale someone nearby of the tale you just read. Tell them about the what you just read! If you don\’t have anyone to tell about what you read, then write about it. Writing is a great method of mental exercise.
Make Your Music Work for You.
If you are playing a record or music CD, try to remember the titles and the order of the songs on that record. Playing it e second time you can act that you are the disk jockey and announce the next song before it is started. You can do this while you are driving your car. Then this is a simple activity that doesn\’t take any extra time out of your day, but you will be surprised at how well you begin to remember the details on which you were trying to focus.
Right is Right.
When writing notes to ourselves, many of us are guilty of scrawling out single words or lone numbers with the expectation of later remembering what it means. Later on when you see that note with a phone number and don’t recall who it was you should give that call. Then the note became worthless.
Equally important as the written information, is why the information is relevant to us. If you write down information, write down either why it is important, or at least make a point of remembering why you wrote it.

There are a great deal of memory techniques out there, but this one is particularly important because it underlies the rest. Techniques to improve your memory are most powerful when you make conscious effort to concentrate.
