Light Up Your Life With a Modern Chandelier

There’s no denying that chandeliers are beautiful, but it can be hard to imagine a classic chandelier fitting into a modern decor. Think outside of the box like quirky Dutch e-tailers Dutchbydesign, and have fun breaking those staid interior design rules.

Like a naughty little brother, Dutchbydesign doesn’t do boring or predictable. Its products are design pieces with an ironic sense of humour, but serious functionality. Classic pieces with a fresh and funky twist are a speciality, so look no further if you want to shake up your decor.

For example, forget everything you thought you knew about the chandelier. Throw the image of the grand, crystal chandelier that never seems to vary in design out of the window and let it shatter. Who says a chandelier can’t be pink, or white, or black? Heck, why can’t it be multi-coloured?

Imagine a girly boudoir with a shabby chic theme and a pink chandelier as its centrepiece. Mix white-washed bedroom furniture with gingham print textiles and some vintage accessories such as a retro vanity set and you have a girly girls dream.

For a more unisex colour scheme monochrome is chic yet modern. Baroque-esque gypsy chandeliers in white or black resin look cool and sophisticated among a monochrome design. The trick with monochrome is to mix up the textures, so put heavy black velvets against light as a feather ivory silks.

A black flocked wallpaper would be especially fabulous in a monochrome scheme, keeping the feeling luxe rather than chequers board. Or you could add texture with a lighting effect, such as the one created by Nicolette Brunklaus’ Delight Lampshade. This intriguing patterned white and black lampshade creates complex light and shade patterns that will add an extra dimension to the atmosphere of any room.

Brave souls could forget the black and try a trendy all white look. Again, play with texture and layer sumptuous textiles to prevent a clinical, dental room atmosphere which may not translate well into relaxation or entertaining.

Intricate patterns work well in a one-colour colour scheme, as they prevent the look from being too modern and try-hard. Soften an all white scheme with the Rococco Mirror in white, baroque meets rococco style Decoco photo frames and a 3D flower design ceramic vase.

If a white resin chandelier isn’t your style then why not go for the breathtaking Icarus Lampshade by Tord Boontje. This stunning design features tumbling feathers resembling a swan\’s wing and is a romantic piece that will add drama to any room.

Colourful characters, on the other hand, will be bored to tears by black and white, and should indulge in the brights trend with a clashing, colour-riot Multi-Colour Gypsy Chandelier. Like all of Dutchbydesigns product range this is a cheeky little number that will lift a scheme out of the design doldrums.

Whether you’re into rainbow brights or pure whites be sure to choose lighting pieces that will surprise and delight. Forget staid shades and poorly designed pendants, visit Dutchbydesign and step into the light.
