The bait usually consists of things like paper, cardboard, wood chips and other things that termites are known to feed on. There will also be an added component that very slowly kills the termites. The termites will find the bait, feed on it and even take it back to the main colony.

Since the termites think what they are eating is real food for them, they devour it just like it was your home. Since it does not kill them right away, they have time to take the bait back to the main colony to share with the others. Over time, this will eliminate the termites in your home. After a certain amount of time, an exterminator will come back for a follow-up visit to inspect your home.

They will be looking to make sure that there does not appear to be any further damage that has been done by the termites. They may even do a second round of the bait even though there does not appear to be any issues. This is done as a “just in case” measure because when dealing with termites, it is important to make sure that they really are gone.
