Different Ways a Physiotherapist Can Help

However, further developments in this field have resulted in this type of therapy being used to treat other conditions. To begin work in this role, one must undergo a courses of study. This is usually a university degree. Once the study period is completed, they must be register with a recognized professional body.
The job of a physical therapist, or physiotherapist as they are known, is to aid recovery for people suffering from a variety of injuries caused by accidents or medical conditions such as arthritis. For example, a common role that this specialized care provider carries out is in helping people with joint problems, especially after an accident. The patient\’s mobility will be assessed at their first appointment. Then a series of exercises will be prescribed for the patient to carry out either at home or in the hospital ward.
Other treatments can also be prescribed by physical therapists. This can include massage, hydrotherapy or manipulation. Alternative therapies such as acupuncture can also be recommended. Other technologies such as ultrasound, infra-red heat or electrotherapy are also carried out by physical therapists.
Apart from muscles and joints, physical therapists also work with people that have breathing difficulties or circulatory problems. They can also work in paediatrics, with with disabled children suffering both physical disabilities and mental disabilities.
Physical therapy with geriatric patients also deals with other age related issues. This could be helping with incontinence or Alzheimer\’s. Another area of physical therapy is to help with skin conditions, such as managing the care of burns.

A physical therapist can work in most type of hospital wards, such as intensive care and the terminally ill. With latter type of patients, the main aim is to make their last days as comfortable as possible. For example, a physio could massage a cancer patient\’s chest area to enable them to breathe easier.
