Use of 3D Modelling Software and How This Impacts on Our Lives
3D modelling software presents the viewer with a virtual model. It may not be possible to pick the model up touch it, feel it and rotate in the hand but it is able to be interpreted on a screen. Since the advent of the photograph and, further on, the movie people have the got used to the idea that three dimensional information can be read from a 2 dimensional picture or screen. The advent of 3D movies has only enhanced this ability.
In an architectural context a building can be built on a screen. It can be rotated in all directions and depending on the sophistication of the model, entered and virtually walked through. Furniture can be placed, virtual kitchens added and views simulated from the inside to the outside.
After viewing such a model a future building owner is then better able to comment on the forthcoming building\’s design and layout. This is because the building is quite realistic and should be easily understood. The alternative traditional sketch and drawing method is often not as easily interpreted by a non professional. Producing a real physical model to this level of sophistication can often be prohibitively expensive.
This not only benefits the building owner but also other building professionals who may be involved in buildings design. The engineer may get an idea of where structural elements need to go without interrupting the internal spaces. They all get to see where any potential problem areas may arise before beginning their final designs.
Some 3D modelling systems are so advanced that now different disciplines in the building design process are able to enter their detailed designs in to the model. This can be of great benefit as it may show up potential problems that could arise from design clashes by different building disciplines. These problems can then get sorted out in the model. The alternative is to have them rise on during the construction which could lead to extra expense and probably time delays.
3D modelling software is not just restricted to the building industry. Surveyors and geologists use mapping software to produce surface contour maps and subsurface maps for various users. Contour maps are also useful to the building designer and can also be incorporated in the building model as outlined above.
Geological software and Geophysical software systems are primarily used by geologists to interpret what is or what might be going on underground. Mining and petrochemical industries are very interested in their conclusions. This information greatly assists in the exploration of these substances by more accurately predicting potential sites of interest.
What might be going on underground is usually of great interest to seismologists or the people who study earthquakes. Many seismic events have caused a lot of destruction in recent years. Accurate 3D models showing the existence or probability of fault lines and causes of potential trouble is essential. Adequate measures can then be taken in these places to minimize damage should these earth shaking events occur.
Another industry that makes great use of 3D modelling software is the car and boat industry. Virtual car bodies and yacht hulls are modeled and then placed in virtual wind tunnels or flow tanks where they are adjusted for minimal drag and therefore maximum speed.
