Someone\’s motivation fluctuates from one moment to another. Sometimes it is very difficult to accomplish even a simple task. On the other hand, some difficult tasks are finished relatively easily. The success of some activity depends of many factors: skills, experience, energy level, time of a day, etc. But one of the most important factors is – the Motivation.

Motivation is something that pushes us toward our goal. If you have motivation for some job, you are working more persistent and longer than usual. But if you are not motivated enough, you find even the most simplest tasks can to be difficult, and you may try to find as many excuses as possible, just to delay or postpone the job.

The Maslow\’s Hierarchy of Needs explains how the motivation works. The motivation is very important factor necessary for performance and goals achievement. Simply, if somebody is not motivated, than the results of the work will be poor. Regardless of education, experience and training, without a proper level of motivation the performance will not be as it could bee. The motivators are working in different levels.

For example, the money can be strong motivator, but only on the short run. Once somebody gets a raise he/she will be motivated for some time. But after a while, the new salary level will not be the motivation no longer, due to adoption to a new level.

Abraham Maslow developed theory of hierarchy of needs, in order to explain the complexity of motivation. The hierarchy of needs, also called Maslow\’s hierarchy of needs, is trying to group the various motivators in different groups.

1. Physiological level is the base level of motivators of hierarchy of needs within Maslow\’s theory. This segment covers breathing, food, water, excretion, sex, and sleep.

2. Safety level is the next level of Maslow\’s hierarchy of needs. This group of need covers personally safety, employment security, health and property.

3. Belonging and love is the next level of hierarchy of needs in the Maslow\’s theory. This group contains the need of belonging to group, family and sexual contact.

4. Esteem is the next level on Abraham Maslow\’s hierarchy of needs. It covers self-esteem, achievements, self-confidence and mutual respect.

5. Self-actualization is the top level of hierarchy of needs and contains the morale, creativity, openness and clear mildness.

The Maslow\’s Hierarchy of Needs plays the important role in the motivation of people. The hierarchy of needs should be the guideline for building healthy working environment. The Maslow\’s hierarchy of needs can be a good checklist for design of every situation and a way of solving any problem of motivation.

The Maslow\’s Hierarchy of Needs can be used as a good base for analyzing every problem with motivation. It can also adress the problem of employee turnover. The lack of motivation can be found everywhere, from the kid resisting to go to the kindergarten, up to the retired persons, who can not find motivation for further achievements, once they stop working.

The issue of motivation is very important in working environments. Employers who are performance oriented are very interested to motivate their employees for the best performance. The Maslow\’s hierarchy can be used as one of the tools that will analyze the motivation factors and help tailoring the environment that will build culture of motivated employees who are achieving desired performance level.
