Access Your Favorite Social Media Sites in Your Car
A few years ago some people thought that perhaps social networking sites were a fad used mostly by young people that would soon go away. They were wrong; the majority of adults utilize at least one social media site on a regular basis in order to communicate with friends. Most of these sites can be accessed easily on a smart phone so why not take the next step give consumers access from their own car? Many companies, including Ford and BMW have done just that! Many of us spend a lot of time in just sitting in our cars at parking lots or eat lunch in our cars while parked in quiet spot. This could be the perfect chance to do a quick post on Facebook or Twitter. Let’s look at some of the coolest social media features offered by today’s cars.
One of Blackberry’s most famous features is the ability to receive e-mail instantly. Of course it’s unsafe to take out your device and check incoming mails while you are driving. However, BMW’s connected system allows you to receive e-mails and will even read them out to you so you don’t have to fumble with a device. This system should also work for text messages. As long as your phone is connected the system will read the text of incoming messages.
BMW Connected App is another feature that allows BMW to access Facebook and Twitter among other things. The driver would need an Iphone which would allow the vehicle to utilize the apps on the phone. The system would allow the driver to post updates on the two social media sites only when the car is at a standstill for safety reasons. Drivers would be also able to access the music library on their iphones via the BMW interface.
Sure many of us love our cars but Toyota wants us to take it a step further and become friends with our car. Toyota is working on developing a system that will allow Toyota to communicate with our car on a personal level. Your car will be able to send you messages and remind you when you need to replace fluids, charge the battery or visit the dealer for service and maintenance. The system is called “Toyota Friend.
Many modern cars are even enabled with WIFI. Ford’s Sync system turns a vehicle into a hot spot when the driver plugs in a modem into the built-in Wi-Fi system. It’s probably not a good idea for the driver to start surfing while driving but this can be great for passengers on long road drives.
Many of us rely on social media sites to keep in contact with friends and co-workers. Modern cars have gone beyond just taking us from one point to another. They enable us to listen to internet radio, receive incoming tweets and texts and our passengers to use their laptops. However our first priority should still be focused on driving; some individuals may find it distracting to hear e-mail messages or incoming tweets when behind the wheel.
