You can start a local business which will be much easier than setting off to create a company of other plumbers that work under you. The good thing about this thought is that whatever route you decide to take know that the steps for each are the same in the beginning. You first step will be to make sure that you have all the applicable certifications and licenses to start a business.
As part of your testing you will be required to pass a written portion and have already had your apprenticeship licensee for a number of years already. This does however, depend on what state you are in though. You will need to get more information from you states certification programs to find out what are the rules and regulations. You may also want to check into getting some form of liability insurance for you upcoming business.
Another thing you will have to consider purchasing is workers compensation. This will be required if you plan to have employees working under you. After you complete this step it will be time for you to purchase a vehicle (preferably a van) and the purchase some plumbing tools. Some tools that plumber need include power saws, screwdrivers, measuring tape, plungers, plumber snakes and pipe and tube cutters.
A lot of your tools can be purchased online or even from other agencies who may be going out of business. There is a chance that they may be selling their equipment cheaper than what you would by at a store. Now do not disregard actual supply stores because you will need these to build your business a good line of credit.
Some of the equipment you will need are toilet seats, wrenches, pipe and tube cutters, power saws, plungers and drain snakes just to name a few. As mentioned earlier, you can get your get your tools cheaper online but it is still a good idea to keep the line of credit with stores in case you may need emergency equipment.
You can use any form of advertising method to get you noticed and they can be as simple as passing out business cards to listing your ad in a plumbing directory. To get a few customers in you can discount your service for the first time so that they can spread the word to others. Eventually, word of mouth will get out about your around town and you will attract more people.
If your business will be accepting credit cards you may want to get invoice receipts and business cards to go along with a merchant account. Be sure to also purchase a credit card machine to complete transactions through credit cards.
