Strength Training and Body Building – What’s the Difference?
Body building is the process of developing a proportioned and muscled physique mainly for aesthetic and competition purposes. Body building uses hypertrophy, which is basically enlargement of cell size, and reduction of fat tissue to achieve the same. In body building physical appearance is of key importance. Fitness is not much of a criterion.
Strength training is for individuals who choose to become fit and strong and hence acquire optimum health. Strength training is also considered to be a sport although it can have more than one goal. In strength training the muscles have to overcome a high resistance of weights and work against it for improved muscle structure.
Diet
A body building diet focuses mainly on muscle growth and fat elimination. Body builders need more food to build up solid muscle tissues. It essentially constitutes of a high protein and a low carbohydrate level. A highly nutritional diet has to be worked out. The diet must include a high protein intake in the form of poultry, red meat and fish.
A strength training diet concentrates on losing or maintaining weight as opposed to bulking up. Each meal must incorporate lean proteins and complex carbohydrates. Protein drinks and protein bars are ideal after workouts.
Exercise Selection
The modes of exercise of strength trainers vary widely. Training starts with pull ups, push ups sit ups, bench presses and squats before the rigorous schedules of weight training set in. The weights lifted are comparatively heavier and you may not be able to lift them consecutively for sets of more than 8. In addition to weight training, aerobic exercises are also given priority to work out the lungs and heart. Strength training by sports such as soccer and cycling is an undemanding and easy way to achieve outdoor fitness.
Body building, on the contrary, involves lower weights but higher reps. The number of repetitions may go up to 20.
Benefits of Strength Training over Body Building
Strength training helps improve overall endurance and stamina levels. Over time it makes you fitter and more able-bodied. It helps achieve an excellent muscle tone without looking bulked up, which is the case with body building. Strength training also increases bone density, which will help avoid osteoporosis and bone fractures. Intense work outs elevate the body’s metabolism rate. It also stimulates the cardiovascular system. Strength training helps in improving posture and preventing frequent injuries in your day-to-day life.
In body building, frequent use of weights puts the bones under stress. Body building is not recommended for teenagers since they face hormonal changes and are still maturing. If they are left unsupervised there is a risk of them harming the growth plates at their bones. Body building is extreme. The use of steroids and other growth drugs to attain a bulked up body is detrimental to your health. It may lead to heart failure, cysts and consequent death.
The good bodybuilders have the same mind … that a sculptor has. If you analyze it, you look in the mirror and you say, okay, I need a bit more deltoids … so that the proportion\’s right, and … you exercise and put those deltoids on, whereas an artist would just slap on some clay on each side.
