Physical Fitness Components

Physical fitness means different things to different individuals. In general, it refers to the ability of the body to perform day to day activities with ease and still have enough reserves of energy to combat stress or emergency situations. Each of us has our own perceptions of what physical fitness actually means. Some people measure physical fitness in terms of strength and some in terms of weight. If you wish to determine how fit you actually are, you must realize that physical fitness is measured by five main components. Let us take a look at the five components of physical fitness.

Body Composition: Body composition is often confused with body weight. However, it refers to the percentage of fat in comparison to the lean body mass which includes muscles and bones. Too much or too little of body fat is detrimental to health. The ideal level of body fat for an individual depends on his age, gender, body type and other heredity factors.

Cardiovascular endurance: Cardiovascular fitness or endurance refers to the capability of the heart and lungs to function properly, thereby supplying the muscles with oxygen laden blood so that they can sustain physical activity. Performing aerobic exercises helps improve cardiovascular fitness.

Muscular Strength: Muscular strength refers to the ability of muscles to exert force in lifting weight. Weight training helps improve muscle strength by increasing the muscular mass. This, in turn, helps your body to burn more fat thereby lowering the body fat ratio.

Muscular Endurance: Muscular endurance refers to the ability to perform repetitive actions for a long time or hold on to a particular position for a prolonged period of time. Performing aerobic exercises as well as cycling or sit-ups helps improve muscular endurance.

Flexibility: Literally, flexibility means pliancy or adjustability. While considering flexibility as a physical fitness component it may be regarded as the body’s capability to move the muscles and joints with ease. It depends on several factors including age, body structure, body composition, etc. Flexibility is essential if you wish to perform your day to day activities with ease and lead an active life.

It’s important to chalk out a proper workout program that you will improve your fitness levels in context of the above mentioned five components. Over stressing your body impacts it negatively. So, it is essential to have a balanced workout program chalked out.
