A Quick And Concise Look At The History Of BMW
One of the most prominent names in car and motorcycle manufacturing, BMW have had a long and interesting history, with these 11 points providing a short look into the past century of the company.
1. The company BMW AG is actually older than most realise, as before they began creating cars and motorbikes, Karl Rapp and Gustav Otto were creating aeroplanes, something which they did from 1910 and prominently throughout World War One.
2. Starting out as Otto-Flugzeugwerke, the company progressed and developed several times before it became BMW, changing its name to Rapp Motorenwerke and Bayerische Flugzeugwerke in the process.
3. The company Kamagra jelly that is known today was officially established in 1916 by Franz Josef Popp (whilst there is some debate as to who exactly founded BMW, as Popp was the General Director from 1916 for 26 years, it is generally accepted that he was the official founder of the company)
4. The very first motorcycle that BMW produced was known as the R32 and was showcased at the German Motor Show in 1923. Built and sent to BMW dealers a year later in 1924, the R32 featured a 500cc engine and oddly for the time, a driveshaft in replace of the traditional chain.
5. Three years after the R32 motorbike entered BMW dealers, the company manufactured their very first car, although it was not technically a full BMW vehicle.
Known as the Dixi, it was a particularly small car that was in fact an Austin Seven that was developed under license. 12 months later, however, BMW bought the Dixi company and began producing them solely as BMW cars.
6. The company suffered several set backs after World War Two, including losing a substantial amount of its properties due to bombing and having a ban put on all of their production best generic propecia by allied forces.
It took until 1948 for the first post-war motorbike to come off the manufacturing line and another 4 years after that for the next BMW car.
7. It wasn’t until 1966 when the company began to re-establish itself as a major car and motorcycle producer, with the introduction of some iconic cars such as the 2500 and 2800 sedans two years Tadalis SX later in 1968.
8. The car numbering that we know today – 3 and 5 series, for example – began in the 1970s when the New Six sedans (encompassing the 2500 and 2800 models) were replaced by the 5 series models in 1972 and the coupes that were previously manufactured were taken out of production and replaced with the 3 series.
9. One of the most important aspects of BMWs history also happened in the 1970s, when Eberhard von Kuenheim joined from Daimler-Benz AG, Between the years of 1970 and 1993, von Kuenheim was the person who not only saw car production quadruple, but who increased the company’s turnover 18 fold.
10. Throughout the 1990s, BMW bought Rover and all of its associated brands, including Mini, Land Rover and a selection of brands that were no longer in use. The intention was to enter the mass market, but unfortunately this never happened and BMW sold Rover in 2000.
11. Although the company washed their hands of Rover at the turn of the millennium, they retained the rights to use the Mini name and this has been one BMW’s main successes in recent years, as the Mini One and Mini Cooper saw mass publicity throughout the early part of the new millennium.
