Nopalea Part of Healthy Aging Month

September was healthy aging month and in line with this, my wife and I have been thinking about habits we can establish that will help us hold on to that elusive fountain of youth for as long as we possibly can.

Coincidentally, we both have birthdays this month. We are actually only three weeks apart, so we both are facing some of the same aging issues, namely that what used to not phase us physically can now result in a sore back.

While neither one of us would trade who we are now for the people we were in our 20s, it sure wouldn’t hurt to still have those young, flexible bodies that could go for days without getting tired or becoming sore.

It is a wake up call to realize that any type of strenuous physical labor can bring soreness for days. Don’t even get me started talking about my back pain. I’m pretty sure my back has been sore for around six months now. Some days it is bearable and other days it is worse. I’ve tried over the counter medications, seeing a chiropractor, and even massage and hot tubs, but nothing relieves the pain.

However, I am going to give Nopalea Juice and the regimen involved in drinking it on a daily basis, a shot. I’ve heard such good things about how this juice, made from the prickly pear cactus, can help with all sorts of ailments, including back pain.

It seems pretty logical to me that a juice made from a plant known as a natural anti-inflammatory could help with my pain. It seems that many pains and ailments in the body stem from inflammation.

In fact, a study about a decade ago made a link between chronic inflammation in the body and serious illness and disease, including Alzheimer’s and even cancer.

What appears to happen is that the body’s super immune defense system that responds to infection and attack with inflammation can sometimes go haywire. So, essentially what happens is once the body fights off the attacker, the inflammation does not back off. It continues to fight. When that happens, the body is essentially attacking healthy cells and fighting itself.

Scientists and researchers had a major breakthrough when they discovered that this behavior could lead to a host of illnesses and disease.

Even the American Heart Association recommends a simple blood test that help people determine their risk of cardiovascular disease based on their body’s hidden inflammation levels.

The C-reactive protein test, known as the CRP, measures silent and hidden inflammation levels in the body. The test measures the level of CRP in the blood stream. Depending on how high or low that level is, doctors can give a good indication of how much risk a person is at for a heart attack.

It is also useful as a baseline; where people can track their CRP levels, as they grow older and then, if necessary, take steps to lower it.

As time passes, more ways to predict and prevent disease in our world mean we also have to take steps to ensure we are going to live as long as we can.
