Information On Reproductions
Reproductions are copies of original pieces or works of art. This can be done by using many different types of methods all which have advantages, disadvantages, and vary in their strength and quality.
The reasons that people choose to have a copy made of something ranges from the original being unavailable to the fact that the original may just include a price tag that is just too expensive for most people to afford. As far as art goes, many times the desired piece is unattainable because it is only available to be seen in a museum.
It could also be that the piece is rather scarce. The only copy available is part of a private collection that is not now nor will it ever be for sale to the public. In these instances, reproductions are the only option if a collector wants to include these pieces in their collection.
While reproductions are indeed copies, this doesn’t mean that they aren’t extremely valuable and of the highest quality possible. If someone is getting their prints from the artist or a representative of the artist, it will be a signed, dated, and numbered copy.
This is extremely important because this will decide the value of the copy. The less that are printed coupled with the popularity of the artist can all add up to the reproductions becoming more valuable as time goes on.
At one time, it was difficult to get a good copy of a piece of work without doing lithograph. This form of printing is excellent, but it can be a little pricy and time consuming because the aluminum sheets used to print must be changed out per color.
This makes it difficult to run just a few copies and more cost effective for the artist or his or her agent to make as many as possible. This means the consumer will pay more for a print that will be mass produced, which may very well bring down the price. The advantage is they are high quality reproductions that can become valuable as well.
Printers today have access to specially designed inkjet printers that allow them to do works known as giclee. In this instance, the artist can order just a few copies made or hundreds.
This is more cost effective because the image and the data are digitally stored after the initial scan. This means that all that is necessary to begin the printing job again is to pull up the file in which the image and data are stored, and do another run job. This keeps the price down for the artist or their representative, and of course, this will be passed onto the collector or customer.
This is a great way to begin or enhance an art collection or to give to a loved one or friend to begin or enhance their own. This is an excellent idea for the person who appreciates fine art but doesn’t want to tie up thousands or even millions of dollars to acquire the original work.
