Playing Great Golf For Seniors

The first and most important aspect of becoming a good senior golfer is to be physically fit. Not only does this help with stamina out on the golf course, but also helps you feel better about yourself mentally. Also as we get older we cannot get as full of a hip and shoulder turn as we did when we were 20 years old. This is important because if we can turn fully that will mean more distance off the tee. This will make us more competitive.

When talking about physical fitness there are two areas to focus on. The first is weight. The reason for this is because being overweight will wear you down towards the end of a round. The second area is flexibility. So a good routine of stretching exercises will do wonders in this area. Then we can have a fuller pivot to the right and the left. Our arms will swing the club back farther as well. Letting your left heel come off the ground on full shots will also help your turn. This will encourage the left knee to break in as it should as well.

The best asset a senior golfer can have is a great short game. This will put you on a level playing field with your younger competitors. Because of this, a senior golfer must become an expert in the short game area. Do you want to play golf on tour as a senior? You have to be a very good putter. There is just no way around this. Seniors can sometimes get a case of the putting yips, because the nerves are not as steady as they once were. In this case the “tall” putter or “belly” putter can help. These clubs are legal for tournament play according to the USGA. I don’t feel a senior golfer should feel strange about using these types of putters. The competition will use them.

Golf course management is important for success as a senior. You need to be able to pick the right shot for the situation. Good course management also means managing your emotions on the golf course. This is an area where you can out think a competitor who is younger than you. Though your body may not be as strong as it once was, you can still use your mind and experience.

An area of golf that has been overlooked, even on the PGA Tour is playing trouble shots. If you look at the great players they can execute a variety of trouble shots to get out of trouble and save par. They can hit a low bump and run shot up to the green. Curve shots to get the ball near the green from a tough spot. Hit the ball out of deep rough. These are shots that need to be practiced, or they are going to be difficult to play during a round of golf. I think many golfers have become too one-dimensional. They think if they have a machine like golf swing that hits the ball straight every time they’re going to win. Besides show me someone who never hit’s an errant shot. In this regard I think playing golf courses in Europe would help many golfers.

I have been playing golf for almost 40 years and have learned a lot about the game. I want to share that with other golfers. It is my hope that this will be of value to other golfers. I write about golf on my blog at http://www.insidegolftips.com
